Sir Simon Denis Rattle, CBE (born 19 January 1955) is an English conductor. He rose to international prominence as conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and since 2002[1] has been principal conductor of the Berlin Philharm...onic (BPO).Rattle was born in Liverpool, the son of Pauline Lila Violet (Greening) and Denis Guttridge Rattle, a Commander in the Royal Navy.[2] He was educated at Liverpool College. Although Rattle studied piano and violin, his early work with orchestras was as a percussionist. He entered the Royal Academy of Music, University of London in 1971. There, his teachers included John Carewe. In 1974, his graduation year, Rattle won the John Player Conductor Competition. After organising and conducting a performance of Mahler's Second Symphony whilst still at the Academy, he was talent-spotted by the music agent Martin Campbell-White, of Harold Holt Ltd. (now Askonas Holt Ltd.), who has since managed Rattle's career.[3] He spent the academic year 1980/81 at St Anne's College, Oxford studying English Language and Literature.[4] He had been attracted to the college by the reputation of Dorothy Bednarowska, Fellow and Tutor in English.[5] He was elected an Honorary Fellow of St Anne's in 1991.[6] He was admitted to the degree of Doctor of Music honoris causa of the University of Oxford in 1999.


サー・サイモン・ラトル（Sir Simon Rattle, CBE, FRSA, 1955年1月19日 - ）は、イギリスの指揮者。2002年9月よりベルリン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の首席指揮者兼芸術監督を務める。リヴァプール生まれ。幼い頃からピアノと打楽器を学び、イングリッシュ・ナショナル・ユース管弦楽団では打楽器奏者を務めた[1]。1971年にロンドンの王立音楽アカデミーに入学し、指揮を学んだ。1974年、ジョン・プレイヤー国際指揮者コンクールに優勝し、ボーンマス交響楽団およびボーンマス・シンフォニエッタの副指揮者に就任した[2]。以後イギリスの主要なオーケストラを指揮し、1977年には、ヤナーチェクの『利口な牝狐の物語』を指揮し[2]、グラインドボーン音楽祭に最年少でデビューした[1]。

20代前半から既にヨーロッパ各地のオーケストラに客演し様々なオーケストラからの主要ポストの申し出を受けたが[1]、1980年に自国のバーミンガム市交響楽団の首席指揮者に就任した[1]。ラトルの就任当時には決して国内的・国際的知名度が高いとは言えなかったこのオーケストラを、徐々に世界的なオーケストラに育て上げた[1][3]。1990年には同オーケストラの音楽監督に就任した[1]。同団との来日も数度果たしている。一方、1979年にロサンジェルス・フィルハーモニックを指揮してアメリカ・デビューを果たし、1981年から1994年まで同楽団の首席客演指揮者となっていた[2]。1994年、イギリス音楽界での貢献が認められ、30代の若さでナイトに叙された[1]。1996年に放送されたテレビ番組『故郷を離れて』では最も優れた芸術番組に与えられる BAFTA賞を受賞している[2]。また、1999年にはバーミンガム市交響楽団との長年にわたる活動に対して "South Bank Show Awards" の "Outstanding Achievement" が贈られた[2]。

2002年、クラウディオ・アバドの後任として、ベルリン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の首席指揮者兼芸術監督に就任した[1]。ラトルはベルリン・フィルの若年層の聴衆および音楽人開拓のための活動である「Zukunft@BPhil」に取り組み、その一環として映画『ベルリン・フィルと子どもたち』を制作した[4]。こうした青少年育成活動は高く評価され、2005年にドイツの教育分野で権威ある賞であるシラー賞を受賞し[4]、2007年にテレビ雑誌 "Hörze" から「ゴールデン・カメラ」を授与されている[2]。一方でラトルは、古典音楽に対するオーセンティックな演奏に対しても活動の幅を拡げ、古楽の演奏団体であるエイジ・オブ・インライトゥメント管弦楽団に客演している[1]。2004年のBBCプロムスでは、同団と共にワーグナーの『ラインの黄金』を演奏会形式で上演し[2]、その後『ニーベルングの指輪』にも取り組んでいる[2]。
