'Greed is good' fed market crisis
October 06, 2008
Using Gordon Gekko's famous saying from the 1987 movie Wall Street, Mr Rudd has put the blame for the sub-prime mortgage crisis on "extreme free-market ideologues" and a culture of greed and short-termism in the American financial sector.
Mr Rudd said the lessons of the "greed is good" ideology had not been learned.
"The 'greed-is-good' era brought the stock market crash of 1987, the savings and loans debacle in the United States and the global recession which gripped many countries in the early 1990s," he said in a speech.
"And today we are still cleaning up the mess of the 21st century children of Gordon Gekko."
