里、野、画は、田んぼに関係する

里の部の漢字、里、野と、
田の部の漢字、画について説明してみました。

里は、田んぼと土からできており、
田んぼや畑のあるところ、それが里だそうです。

野の右側は、「二つが重なっているが一つは伸ばされている」ことを表しており、
里を過ぎて、ずっと伸びていった場所、広い野原からきているそうです。

また、画は、
田んぼに境目を作った形からきているそうです。

 

 

 

 

 

里、野、画(countryside, plain field, picture) --- from rice fields

It is often that you'll find what looks like the rice-field part 田 (ta) within a certain character. Today's Japanese characters on the title include 田,respectively. Especially, the first two examples, which are 里 and 野, belong to Sato-no bu (里の部), the group of Countryside. Now, I'd like to explain to you these characters and their origins. How were they born?

 

 

 

 

(1)里 (Sato, countryside)

 

First of all, this character is a symbol for a countryside or rural area.

As you look at my attached picture, it's easy to understand how it was born with my explanation. The upper part was from rice fields, and the lower part came from the earth, on which a shoot is coming out. 

You can say the definition of 里 like this; 里 is an area with rice fields and lands for other vegetables.

里 belongs to Sato-no Bu (里の部, the group of countryside).

 

 

 

 

(2)野 (No, Ya, field)

 

Another 里-group Kanji is 野, meaning a field. 平野 (Heiya) means a plain field. Geologically, the largest plain field in Japan is named "Kanto Heiya (関東平野)," surrounding Tokyo, the capital, and its bedroom suburbs, which is what we call "bed town," instead.

The right part conveys that two similar things are placed, yet, the lower one is pulled with a string. Altogether, the whole thing implies "expanding or stretching."

Therefore, 野 can be explained like a place where only a few people live but the plain field, walking past the populated town 里. That expansion became the plain field 野.

野 is also a member of the Sato group.

 

 

 

 

(3)画 (Ga, Kaku, partition)

 

Lastly, belonging to the Ta (田) group, 画 means partition or separation, which I translated by myself.

Simply put, this character was created from the fact that people separated rice fields. Today's rice fields are also partitioned squarely.

It's interesting to learn that our life in Japan has been associated with the rice culture since ancient times. So is today.
