Johnny × Yuzuru
Johnny and Yuzuru talked to each other in the magazine"World Figure Skating #49".
Attention: What Johnny said in their talks is translated into Japanese in the magazine.
His words posted in here are not his own words in actual, but re-translation from Japanese into
English by me.
Therefore, please do not reproduce this article to any other place.
First of all, please let me hear about the impression of skating mutually.
Yuzuru: Johnny's "Otonal" has left a strong impression on my mind.
It was just according with skating at which I aim.
I felt it as if the sound had been emitted from his body.

Johnny: It was when I watched Yuzuru’s videos of WJC in Youtube that I came to know
him for the first.
I was surprised, because he had a sheer individuality and his own style though
he was still 14 years old at that time.
Moreover, I thought that it was unusual for Japanese skater but his skating was
At that age, he was already an artist.

Did you know that Yuzuru was your fan?
J: No I didn't.
But, whenever a skater supports the other skater, he always finds something in
I thought that the atmosphere of his costume and style looked like me,
and I felt his landing of jumps was also same.
Though it was so, he perfectly did his own skating.
Have you thought consciously that you learn something from Johnny's skating, concretely?
Y: Originally, I was recommended by saying "Watch this because your skating looked like
him" and saw.
I was going to take everything from him as much as possible.
Please tell details why you came to design Yuzuru's costume.
J: When performing together in the show of Mr.Makabe,
I was offered it from Nanami (Abe) of his coach last year.
I had an experience to become a junior champion at the age of 16.
I had known that how difficult to survive for young skater in this (figure skating)
world, and I wanted to help him.
Seeing from me, his physique which has long arms and legs is a perfect proportion
just like a ballet dancer.
Therefore, I get the inspiration from his physique rather than music and designed it.
How did you feel to see the costume?
Y: It was a costume for FS in last year, and I love it very much.
I thought that I would do my best by wearing it.
J: I was also watching Yuzuru whenever he came on to the competitions last year,
though it was painful for me to see figure skating because I was sitting out all of the
However, I always wrote in Twitter for assisting him.
I wanted to support a young skater as a senior.
A lot of fans in US see my Twitter, and I wanted to become his help of popularity.
How was your motivation as you had gotten the message of cheering from Johnny
Y: Yes, it was a competition that I felt pressure very much, therefore the message from
him who I yearned for a long time helped me mentally very much.
J: That title was a huge win for him.
I want him to enter for the Worlds at the next season, surely.
To win within 3rd place in Japanese Nationals is very difficult.
Y: But I want to enter for it too, by seeing Moscow Worlds.
If I am able to come out to such a big competition, a chance that Johnny can see me
will be increased too.
J: As same as in the United States, skater's level in Japan is too high so that it is
difficult to be elected as a representative.
However seeing from me, Japanese male skaters who have genuine expression and
individuality and also can land high-quality jumps are only Takahashi and Yuzuru.
Another skaters has both merit and demerit, but Yuzuru can do all of skating and
spins, jumps well.
He is a skater who is really balanced.
In my opinion, he should have been selected to representative for the Worlds in Moscow.
Y: However, I can’t see my completed style yet.
I have not reached my maximum in all respects yet.
I think that I should practice more in the future.
