The 1950s were a time of invention. Considering all of the game-changing new products developed for the Second World War, the possibilities seemed limitless. General Motors had been researching the feasibility of gas turbine engines in cars since the 1930s. In the early 1950s, the company began building an actual engine.
By 1953, the research team had produced the Firebird I, which looked like a jet aircraft with wheels. It was the first gas turbine-powered car tested in the U.S. The Firebird II, introduced in 1956, was a more practical design - a four-seat, family car. It also had a gas-turbine powerplant producing a respectable 200 hp.
The third design, the Firebird III, was built in 1958 and exhibited at the 1959 GM Motorama. It featured seven short wings and tail fins. The two-seater was powered by a 225 hp gas turbine engine - with a small, two-cylinder gasoline engine to run all the accessories. The Firebird III's exterior design featured a double bubble canopy. Despite its wild styling, the car was actually roadworthy and featured many technical advancements such as cruise control, anti-lock brakes, and air conditioning. It also featured an "ultra-sonic" key which signaled the doors to open and an automated guidance system to avoid accidents and joystick steering. It also had a DeDion independent rear suspension.
The Firebird III rode on a 119-inch wheelbase, was 240 inches long - the length of a Cadillac Series 75 Limousine of the period - and was a mere 44 inches tall at cockpit bubble apex and 57 inches high at the rear fin. The sleek, futuristic beast weighed a hefty 5,275 pounds, despite its titanium and fiberglass body panels.

In 1992, I purchased a 1:43 scale model of the Firebird II. It it a heavy white metal model, handcast by Great American Dream Machines.
These Firebird concept vehicles excited the public but - despite GM's best efforts - technical hurdles, high powerplant costs and appalling gas mileage rendered the gas turbine impractical for passenger car use.

I first saw the Firebird I at the Collier Auto Museum in Florida in the early 1990s. I spotted the Firebird III on exhibit at the Henry Ford Museum during a 1995 visit. I finally saw all three Firebirds displayed together at the AACA Antique Auto Museum in Hershey, PA in October 2008.

very scarce, original 1950s HUBLEY REAL TOYS DIECAST

GENERAL MOTORS FIREBIRD III CONCEPT CAR

ATTENTION INTERNATIONAL BUYERS! Know what the shipping-cost to your country will be before bidding on this item! Please read my shipping-information, as noted below!!

No reserve on this very scarce, original vintage Hubley Real Toys of Lancaster, Pa small-scale diecast General Motors Firebird III Research Coupe in red. This Firebird III is in nice condition but isn’t mint as there is some edge wear visible on it in places, as you can easily see in the accompanying photos. One of the photos shows this Firebird III with an additional Hubley Corvette that I currently have at auction here on ebay but this auction is for the one Fiirebird III only. Been sitting in my smoke-free and, generally, dust-free Model Diecast Car collection for many, many years. Both clear plastic bubble- canopies are intact, though they have some scratches, and all of the fins are nice and straight with the exception of the right rear flat-fin, which is bent slightly downward. The original decals were long-ago applied and still look great. The tires and hubs all look good and they all roll easily. Nothing broken and nothing missing. This Vintage Firebird III measures approximately 4-inches-in-length and looks to be maybe 1/55-scale, or so. A very unusual subject for a toy diecast car and it looks very good and displays very well and makes a very worthy addition to any collection! Again, this Hubley Firebird III is not mint and is sold "as-is"; please check out all of the photos carefully! Please see our other auctions; always lots of goodies and fun stuff to bid on!! COMBINE AUCTION "WINS" AND SAVE ON SHIPPING!

Here is a superb awesome 1960's Cragston FIREBIRD III Battery - Op Concept Car. It is about 11.5" long .This car has very minor edge wear. Both canopies are complete with no cracks .It advances with mystery action and flashing engine lights. It was made in Japan & uses two "D" size batteries. It's working condition is excellent. It comes with it's original box .There is tape on the splits in the cover & the previous owner wrote on the top with a green ball point the number 3 million .This awesome concept car would enhance your collection & is certainly a super conversational item.

From Revell Models, comes an original blueprint dated 3-20-59 for a never produced plastic model kit of the GM Firebird III. This car would've been the follow up to their Lincoln Futura model, but apparently the project was shelved before it went into production. Due to its age, the images are a bit faded, especially the text, but the type says Revell Incorporated, 1/25th scale, GM Firebrd III and there are other specs such as wheelbase, etc.. The drawings show front, rear and sideviews of the car. The paper measures 17" x 11" and has been folded in half. A piece of model car history.
