愛されるALTになる!

"To be an ALT loved by everyone?  That's not what I want to do.  I just want to teach English and live in Japan."
If you think this way, you are not suitable to be an ALT.

If you try and are loved by students, teachers, and people in the area, your life in Japan will be much much easier and, who knows, further opportunities will be offered to you.

Here are some points you need to remember.
(These are my personal opinions, though.)

☆ Be cheerful.  Even outside of school.
In a small city, it might be troublesome to get attention.
You will be an instant celebrity there; anything you do will be watched.
Try to be nice to everyone.
In school, try to speak to students creating aura that you love
      children, even if you don't!

☆ Make activities of your own for each lesson.
Even if you make an acitivity, teachers may not use it in class.
Even so, continue to do so.
This is not the matter of your activies being adopted in class.
It is the matter of your  co-teachers knowing that you are trying.
Make a list of the activities you can conduct.

☆ Besides activities for each lesson, prepare presentation about
yourself, your country, your hometown, etc.
Make a list of your presentations and give it to the teacher
      in charge of ALTs.

☆ In class, be helpful for Japanese teachers.
Help them hand out printouts, clean the blackboard, control students,
      etc.
It might be better to think that the Japanese teachers are not your
     co-workers but your employers.

☆ Do not sit in class.
It may be OK in classrooms in America for teachers to sit on a desk,
      but it's no-no in Japan.
Keep standing and watch students even when you are not directly
      in the ongoing assignment.

☆ Japanese teachers and people are not good at speaking, but are
      very good at spelling.
Review spellings.  When you make a spelling mistake, it may
      undermine your reputation.

☆ Be familiar with Japanese English education.
For example, "forgot" and "forgotten" are both accepted for
      the past participle

to be continued.
