Guest Speaker || Syd Mead
The Geek Day team is pleased to welcome Syd Mead as a Guest Speaker during our Closing Keynote. The term "Visual Futurist" may well have been coined to describe Syd Mead, a man for whom the future is his reality and he delights in giving us all a sneak preview. From his earliest assignments at the Advanced Styling Studio of Ford Motor company immediately after graduation from Art Center School of Design, Syd’s innate sense of design, coupled with his extraordinary illustration abilities, soon developed into a recognizable futuristic yet realistic, “SYD MEAD STYLE”. This recognizable style soon became highly sought after by other major corporations around the world leading to the formation of Syd Mead Inc. in 1970 to service such diverse clients as Philips, Disney, US Steel, Sony, Mattel and since 1979, most major movie studios in Hollywood, on features such as: “BLADE RUNNER”, “TRON”, “STARTREK THE MOTION PICTURE”, “ALIENS” and in 2006, the Tom Cruise movie “MI-3” for director J.J. Abrams who commissioned Syd to design the “Mask Maker”. Few artists or designers have been as fortunate as to be involved with such a variety of industries around the world. Whether it is designs for vehicles, theme parks, interactive games, toys, products, theatre sets, ships, planes, or architecture, Syd has managed to leave his mark and provided his unique perspective each and every time. In 1985, Syd established his own publishing company OBLAGON Inc. in response to the numerous requests for images and examples of his work. It’s first of several publications, “OBLAGON; CONCEPTS OF SYD MEAD” was released later that year and soon sold out if's first printing. Today, the company offers a 4 volume DVD series titled, “TECHNIQUES OF SYD MEAD” as well as a personal documentary "VISUAL FUTURIST". Syd Mead continues to provide his design and illustration services the world over and since 1983 has become a highly sought after speaker and presenter to educational, corporate and special event groups from around the world including universities in the US, Japan, Korea, Europe and the American University of Dubai.
