Shel Silverstein ( その他文学 ) - Anne's English Cafe(英語教師の出直し英会話)

英会話サークルで、Shel Silversteinの『Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take The Garbage Out』(「サラ・シンシア・シルビア・スタウトはどうしてもごみ出しをしようとしなかった」)という面白い英詩をアメリカの先生からを学びました。

食べ物に関する語彙を学ぶという目的ですが、環境問題にも関心が高い先生の教材だけに、とても面白い授業でした。サラ・シンシア・シルビア・スタウトという名前の女の人がゴミをださず、家が壊れるほど溜め込んで、ついにはそのためになくなってしまうというお話です。ゴミを出すことも大事なことだという教訓を子供に面白くわからせる詩です。

先生からShel Silversteinの名前を耳にした時、聞いたことのある名前でしたが、どうしてもどんな作品を読んだのか思い出せませんでした。

The name rings a bell, but I can't remember any of his works.
(名前を聞いてピンとくるものはありますが、彼の作品について全く思い出せません。)

今朝新聞で、村上春樹がシェル・シルヴァスタインの「おおきな木」の翻訳本を出版したという広告を目にし、やっと思い出しました。"The Giving Tree"という作品が、中学の教科書でかなり前に取り上げられていたことがあったのです。

何人かのアメリカ人に聞いたら、小学校の時にこの詩を暗唱させられたことがあるそうです。
環境問題を身近に感じ、自分のできることから取り組むという姿勢を生徒に学ばせるのにもいい教材らしいです。

難しい単語もありますが、YouTubeでもいろいろなおもしろいビデオがあるので、生徒が暇な時に（最近の生徒は部活もあり忙しすぎて、学校のテキストで手一杯ですが）教材として使ってみたいなと思いました。

シルヴァスタイン（1932-1999）シカゴ生まれ。
American poet, singer-songwriter, musician, composer, cartoonist, screenwriter and author of children's booksと多才な芸術家でした。

Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout
Would not take the garbage out!
She'd scour the pots and scrape the pans,
Candy the yams and spice the hams,
And though her daddy would scream and shout,
She simply would not take the garbage out.
And so it piled up the ceilings:
Coffee grounds, potato peelings,
Brown bananas, rotten peas,
Chunks of sour cottage cheese.
It filled the can, it covered the floor,
It cracked the window and blocked the door
With bacon rinds and chicken bones,
Drippy ends of ice cream cones,
Prune pits, peach pits, orange peel,
Gloppy glumps of cold outmeal,
Pizza crust and withered greens,
Soggy beans and tangerines,
Crusts of black burned buttered toast,
Gristly bits of beefy roasts...
The garbage rolled on down the hall,
It raised the roof, it broke the wall...
Greasy napkins, cookie crumbs,
Globs of gooey bubble gum,
Cellophane from green baloney,
Rubbery blubbery macaroni,
Peanut butter, caked and dry,
Curdled milk and crusts of pie,
Moldy melons, dried-up mustard,
Eggshells mixed with lemon custard,
Cold french fries and rancid meat,
Yellow lumps of Cream of Wheat.
At last the garbage reached so high
That finally it touched the sky.
And all the neighbors moved away,
And none of her friends would come to play.
And finally Sarah Cynthia Stout said,
"OK, I'll take the garbage out!"
But then, of course, it was too late...
The garbage reached across the state,
From New York to the Golden Gate.
And there, in the garbage she did hate,
Poor Sarah met an awful fate,
That I cannot right now relate
Because the hour is much too late.
But children, remember Sarah Stout 
And always take the garbage out!

馴染みのない単語

scour pots and pans（鍋や釜をきれいに磨く）
candy the yams (サツマイモを砂糖で煮る)

gloppy glumps of cold oatmeal (どろっとしたうんざりする冷めたオートミール)
glumpはgloppyと韻を踏ませた造語らしく、「嫌なもの」の意味でいいと言われたと思います。先生の話されるスピードがどんど速くなり、確信が持てません。ご存知の方教えてください♪
