靖国参拝、外国マスコミの反応
欧米の記者は小泉首相の靖国参拝をどのように伝えただろうか？
ざっと見ると、小泉首相が任期の最後に公約を実行した様子と、参拝後の記者会見の一部、中韓が即座に抗議した事実をそのまま伝えている。
しかし、おおむね日本に対して好意的な記事ではない。
日本の右傾化を指摘する記事もある。
日本の国民の大部分と同様に、外国でも靖国神社の知識がほとんどない。
靖国論争はもう終結すべきだが、各紙の要点だけをご紹介する。

Alexander Downer, the Australian foreign minister, joined China, as well as South Korea, in condemning Mr Koizumi’s actions. Mr Downer said it was understandable that Japan wanted to pay homage to its war dead, but “what makes us uncomfortable about this issue is the presence of the Class A war criminals.”
オーストラリアのAlexander Downer外相は中国・韓国に同調し、小泉首相の行動を非難した。
Downer氏は日本が戦没者に敬意を表したいのは理解できるが、「この問題で不快に思うのは、Ａ級戦犯が合祀されていることだ」と語った。
Mr Koizumi, who steps down as prime minister next month, is likely to be succeeded by Shinzo Abe, chief cabinet secretary. Although Mr Abe is a regular visitor to the shrine, there are tentative signs that he may refrain from going as prime minister in the interests of better relations with neighbours.
小泉首相は来月首相の座を降りるが、安倍晋三官房長官が後を継ぐ模様だ。
阿部氏は靖国神社にいつも参拝しているが、首相になった場合は近隣諸国との関係改善のために靖国参拝を中止するのではないかという節(ふし)もある。

Ignoring protests at home and abroad, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi visited a shrine memorializing Japan's war dead Tuesday, and a few hours later a possible arson fire burned down the home and office of a lawmaker who has criticized the leader's pilgrimages.
日本の国内外の抗議を無視して、小泉純一郎首相は戦没者を祭った(靖国)神社に参拝した。
そして数時間後に首相の参拝を批判した議員の家とオフィスが放火で全焼した。

Koizumi went to Yasukuni Shrine on the anniversary of Japan's World War II surrender to fulfill a 2001 campaign promise, shrugging off several days of demonstrations in Tokyo by those who feel the shrine glorifies Japanese militarism and complaints from China and South Korea.
靖国神社は軍国主義を美化するものだとして抗議する人達の数日間に渡る東京でのデモ行進や中韓の抗議を無視して、小泉首相は2001年の公約を果たすために、終戦記念日に靖国神社に参拝した。
"It was a self-righteous decision," said Yoshinori Murai, a political scientist at Tokyo's Sophia University. "Japan will be isolated if it shows it doesn't care about criticisms from home and abroad."
「独善的な決定だ」と Yoshinori Murai 上智大学教授(政治学)は言う。
「日本国内、国外の批判を無視すれば日本は孤立するだろう」
But while Japan's military and diplomatic ties with its top ally, the United States, have prospered, its relations with Asian neighbors have deteriorated. Anti-Japanese protests flared up last year in several Chinese cities.

U.S. officials have shown growing concern over rising tensions between Japan and China and South Korea, but they have been careful not to criticize Koizumi's Yasukuni visits.
The prime minister is a friend of President Bush and is widely considered his closest ally in Asia.

Opinion polls have shown that the Japanese public remains split on the issue.
