To my surprise, I flew back to Tokyo, sitting next to a Japanese young girl, a Russian language student at Sofia University, who seemed to perfectly understand this nation's spirit. We discussed how frustrating is to deal with the Russians, and she was agreeing in everything I was saying. However, when I asked her why did she chose Russian language she said it was because Russians have very kind and warm hearts on a personal level. Japanese treat people with care and respect in shops and in the business scene, but their hearts are cold and distant on a personal level, and she appreciated this human warmth.
We thought and discussed about the Russian character and we reached our conclusions:
1. Everything in Russia tends to be long. For example: their words, novels, ballet, they talk shows on TV, they talk on the phone long time (it's free of charge to call within the city), parties, etc.
2. There is no diplomatic negotiation or orderly lining up for things, it resembles fighting, actually it becomes fighting. Russians are hot tempered. Russians like to do everything to excess, and if possible in a sentimental way.
3. In Russia everything must be tragic: their novels, movies, theater, ballet, they all end in dispair and tragedy. You never die laughing from a Russian novel. They usually believe to be the slaves of fate and unable to control thier own destiny, therefore they are great pessimists and have no hope of anything turning out well, hence the no change 17 years after the Perestroika.
4. The nation has a severe alcoholism problem and there are often drunks lying in the streets. Today the economy is in bad shape and Russians are struggling to make enough money to live, yet Moscow is the most expensive city in the world right now.
5. Russians have a great sould called dusha and tend to be sentimental and like to open thier souls to you and talk about their lives. They will never consider you a friend before you've gotten dead drunk together. They will drink too much, cry, fall in love, fall out of love, think deeply abut life, then fall asleep. It is not only the working classes who drink, but the intellectual and bureaucratic classes too. Gorbachev's unpopularity started because he attempted to decrease the amount of drinking vodka. Once they caught you, you have to listen to their life story. To foreigners, the Russian soul is indeed very large, but it is also very dark and unhappy, always in search for the meaning of life.
6. Normally, Russians are deep down very serious people (not much humor unless you learn the specific Russian humour), and they love being in touch with other poeple. This is usually done by sitting together for long hours over tea or vodka, frequently in the kitchen (which is in the underground, to keep the wine temperature constant, protecting it from the summer heat and winter freezing -40degrees cold).
7. Even though they are just so pesimistic (the opposite of Mediterranean people who are optimistic), they still believe that they are destined to save the world. This is a contradiction though. Anyway, they think they can do that from every aspect: from culture to politics to ethics to science. For example, they would never show a violent cartoon to their children, their manga is always with a deep ethical message. Just watch Russian movies and you will discover how sentimental, pessimistic and exagerate they are in everything they do.
This is how a Russian party (the pictures below are of our actor friends partying) takes place: usually at someone's house, lasts until morning, everyone wakes up with a huge hangover, but by then everyone has told all thier secrets and life histories, they've fooled around, played like kids, fought, made up, threw up, fall asleep, and forgot all about it.
