can & be able to do

1. am [are; is] able to do = can

can が使えるときは be able to も使える。

　　　　He is able to speak ten languages. < He can speak ten languages.

　　 彼は10の言語を話せる。


2. was [were] able to do = could

｢〜する能力があった」の意味では両方とも使える。

　　　　I could / was able to run much faster hwen I was young.

　　　　若いころはもっとずっと速く走れた。


3. was [were] able to do : ｢実際に行った行為」: (could は使えない)
　　　　
　　　　　The fire fighters were able to put the fire out quickly.

　　　　　消防隊はその火事をあっという間に消すことができた。


　　　　4. was [were] able to do = could : 知覚動詞は動詞は実際行動でも使える
　　　　
　　　　　I was able to see a figure in the dark.= I could see a figure in the dark.

暗やみの中に人の姿がみえた。


5. 現在時の仮定法

I'm very hungry. I could eat a horse.

ものすごくおなかがすいた。馬一頭でも食べられる。



　　　　6. was [were] not able to do = could not: 否定文では両方とも使える

The door was locked, so I couldn't (=wasn't able to / was unable to) get in.

ドアには鍵がかかっていたので、中へ入れなかった。


　　　　7. will be able to do 「〜できるでしょう」(will canはなし)

He'll be able to speak English in a few years.

彼は数年で英語を話せるようになるでしょう。


　　　　8. have been able to do　「ずっと〜できた」(have been canはなし)

Birds have been able to colonize so much of the world.

　　　　　　鳥は世界の多くの地域に住み込むことができた。



　　　　9. had been able to do 「それまでずっと〜できた」(had been canはなし)

But no one had been able to extract insulin.

　　　　　　しかしそれまで誰もインスリンを抽出できませんでした。


　　　　10. may be able to do 「〜できるかも知れない」(may canはなし)

Atmospheric scientists may be able to predict the weather ahead.

　　　　　　大気科学者は天候を前もって予測できるようになるかも知れません。



　　　　11. might be able to do 「〜できるかも知れない」(might canはなし)

He might be able to give me a job.

彼はぼくに仕事をくれることができるかもしれない。



　　　　12. must be able to do [〜できなければならない]」(must canはなし)

　　　　　　The human feet must be able to bear the weight of the entire body.

　　　　　　人間の足は全体重の重さに耐えることができなければならない。


[考察]

　　　　　　英文法書に｢なぜそうなのか」に答えているのにお目にかかれない。ここではあえてその「なぜ」に大胆に切り込んでみたい。幼い暴論、無知による極論と思われることを覚悟で挑戦してみたい。さもないと若い諸君が無手勝流に英語を学ぶ風潮に風穴はいつになっても開かないと思うから。全国のあるいは全世界の英語を学ぶ人々の忌憚のないご批判と御叱責をお待ちしえています。

　　　　could はなぜ「単一の行為・動作の実行」した場合に使わないのか？

　　　　もともとcan, may, must, shall, willは法助動詞と言って、「話手の心的態度」を表すのである。とくに現実に起こった過去の事実を述べるのに適さない。ただし否定文ではそれが現実には起こっていないことだからのべてもかまわない。
