Liber 1
---------------- He is working his way to escape the most difficult place (the problem of God's prescience), but in a wrong manner. Item alio loco, cum eamdem, qua se ipse implicuerat, velut explicandam proponeret quaestionem, tamquam ex persona adversariorum ait: ---------------------- Moreover, at another place in his letter, showing the same problem in which he had engaged himself as to be unfolded now, says under the persona of his opponents : (*1)the problem about the original sin.............why did the soul get the original sin?
--------------------- "Why (as the opponents ask) did God treat the soul with such an unjust intention, as to intend to send it away into the body of sin? For, by coming into a union with the body the soul ----who could not have been a sinner by that time---- starts to be a sinner."
--------------------- In this question, which is like an ocean full of dangerous rocks, he should have been especially cautious against shipwreck, and even should not have sent himself there, from where he could not going to escape by just crossing, but perhaps he can by returning, that is to say, by regretting and reviewing his course (of thought).
--------------------- For, he is working his way to escape the most difficult area, that is, the problem of God's foreknowledge, but in a wrong manner.
------------------- He has to know the fact, that by foreknowledge God "foreknows" those sinners whom he is going to heal, not "makes".
-------------------------- Because, if God frees those souls from sin whom he enveloped in sin, then he heals the wound which he "gave" us, not which he "found" and "discoverd" in us. (Isn't that absurd?) Avertat autem Deus, et omnino absit, ut dicamus, quando lavacro regenerationis Deus mundat animas parvulorum, tunc eum mala sua corrigere, quae illis ipse fecit, cum eas nullum habentes peccatum peccatrici carni, cuius originali peccato contaminarentur, admiscuit.
------------------- But God doesn't want us to say that "when God cleanses the souls of infants with the bath of regeneration, at that moment God corrects his own misdeeds which he had done to those souls, that is to say, when he mixed those originally sinless souls into the sinful body, from the intention that by the original sin of the body those souls would be contaminated", and we are far from saying that. Quas tamen iste accusans dicit inquinari meruisse per carnem, nec potest dicere unde tantum mali meruerint ante carnem.
------------------ However, he (Vincentius Victor) accusingly says that those souls by some reason deserved to be polluted by the body. But he can't give the reason, that is, why the souls, before the entrance into the body, deserved to get such a great misfortune, or punishment (=to be made to enter into the body, to be corrupted). |

Liber 1
(*1)Liber 1 6.6 "si anima non de parentibus trahitur, sed a Deo nova insufflatur"(もし霊魂が両親からもらうものではなく、神から新たに吹きこまれるものであるなら) Videmus ergo eam per gratiam liberari a peccato: sed non videmus unde meruerit haerere peccato.
Sicut ergo dicit unde anima parvuli fuerit liberata peccatrix, sic etiam dicat unde meruerit esse peccatrix.
