“ Amity Yokohama, Summer Seminar, 2009 “
Speech Titel: Friendship story between Japan and America through blue eyed Friendship Dolls ------ 　wishes ,succeeded from Gulick to Gulick
Date & time ; August 22nd (Saturday), 2009 10:30-12:30
Venue; Akai Kutsu Gekijyo, in the “Yokohama ,Doll Museum”
Lecturers ; Mr. Sidney L Gulick lll, USA
He was born in California in 1936as a grandson of Mr. Sidney Gulick who sent
Friend ship dolls to Japan in 1927
For the past 44 years I have taught mathematics at the University of Maryland,
which is 12 kilometers from Washington, D.C. I love teaching calculus,
mathematical chaos and fractals.
for the future relationship between Japan and U.S,　and since then, this
Participants : 79 (including members 18) guests:6y organizaton.
His speech has 8 parts.
1. Early 20th century and my grandfather’s desire for better relations between the United States and Japan.---Mr. Gulick had to come back to US after more than twenty years stay in Japan as missionary.
2. Preparation for the doll mission from the United States to Japan in 1926
3. Arrival of the dolls of friendship in Japan
4. The return doll mission that sent ambassador dolls from Japan to the United States in
1927. In a farewell ceremony , Japanese Ambassador to the United states,Mr. Matsudaira
said the aim of the doll ambassador was to fulfill ‘ the important task of
building hearts of
our children to those of yours by the silken cord of peace and love. He played an
important role in this project.
5.What happened during the next few decades---During war many dolls of friendship in both
Japan and US were lost because they were hidden or forgotten or destroyed.
In 1974 the history of a special Doll Messenger, Mary was broadcast by the television
network NHK. After that little by little original dolls were found.
6.Modern doll missions that are “descendants” of the original doll missions. In 1986 the
Yokohama Doll Museum opened its door.
7.My father’s feelings about the Japanese
His father was a professor of English at San Diego State college and he wa the person
who spoke out nationally for freedom of speech when s by certain government officials
to limit freedom of speech.
His father served as preside of Yokohama-San Diego sister City. His father was
invited at the opening ceremony of Doll Museum. But at that time he was too old and too
sick to go to Yokohama. Instead of him, his son , Sidney Gulick attended it. It was
the new beginning of new friendship doll mission.
8.Conclusion
He believes what his grandfather said nearly 100 years ago is true today:
“The achievement of world peace depends on many factors, economic, political,
educational, moral, spiritual. To ensure it for the next generation means a steady
building of understanding and goodwill among the children of today.”

The ceremony of presenting new friendship doll was held.
He presented a new friendship doll,, Mary Sue who would go to Miyagaya elementary school. As a little ambassador for everyone at the school.

Miyagaya elementary school has dolls, called Taro and Hanako.
Profile of Dolls (Taro and Hanako)
In 1927 A blue eye friendship doll was presented to this school.
At that time she was lonely so Hanako became her friend. After World War II broke out, the original doll was removed. Instead of her, Taro was made. For a while after the war two dolls were displayed together. But they became old and worn out, and they were left to a teacher’
care.
More recently a new school building was completed. So they came back to Miyagaya school,
received a new clothes, and can look splendid!
Q& A ----There are lots of questions, from doll mission to his hobby, playing cello .

Title ; “ Japonisme, Japanese influence on Europe and a Personal History ”
Lecturer ; Professor Phillip Dennis Cate, Rutgers University , NJ, USA
Date ; 14th May, 2004
Place ; Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall

Summary
1) The history of Rutgers University as the British Place in the United
States of Japanese American Relations ;
In 1866-67, the first Japanese students coming to the U.S. to study and to complete their studies came to Rutgers College which, at that time, was a Dodge Reform Church College in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Kusakabe Taro was the first Japanese student to receive a Phi Beta Kappa honorary key. In 1870, Kusakabe’s teacher at Rutgers, William Elliot Griffis traveled to Echizen to be the first American Professor in Japan, and to help establish a Western system of science education. After one year, Griffis went to Tokyo where he taught for four years at the future Tokyo University. Whereas, well-known in Japan and ever learned students at Rutgers were Matsukata Kojiro, famous for his Matsukata-Collection, Komura Jyutaro, well-known for a signer of Japan-Russo Peace Treaty at Portsmouth, and many others.

2) My own family’s relationship with Meiji Japan:
In 1890, my grandfather Isaac Wallace Cate came to Tokyo to help establish the Universalist Church in Japan. Within two years, my grandmother Ella Stimson Cate also arrived in Japan. They had five children in Japan, and taught at Waseda and Meiji Universities. My father lived in Japan until he was 17 years old. After my grandfather died in 1908, my grandmother remained in Japan for fourteen years teaching English and directing Shakespeare plays.

3) The Artistic influence of Japan on French nineteenth-century-art by such artists as Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, Paul Cezanne, Dega, Van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and many other artists.

Amity Yokohama Open seminar No.1
TItle : Japan and U.S relationship after Relationship after the visit of United States
Commodore Perry
Lecturer : Prof. Conway, Maryland University ( on U.S base )
TIME and Date :: on 28th March, 2003, from 14;00 to 16;00

Speech-summary
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the visit of United States Commodore Mathew C. Perry and his squadron of black ships to Uraga.

Westerners, such as T.S. Eliot, have noted that we do not know much about the future.

The results of this visit, promoted by President Franklin Pierce’s concern for whalers stranded in Japan, and, ostensibly to open trade, could not have been foreseen at that time.

I wish to consider the political, technological, and economic impacts on Japan, of the visit, from the American perspective.
