返照 -- 杜甫

杜甫の秋の詩がまだあるのだが、固有名詞や中国の歴史を英語で簡潔に表現するのに困る詩が多い。白帝城にしても、白帝と自称した人物が城を築いたのが始まりだから、White Emperor’s Castle という訳があるそうだ。姫路城のように白ければ、白鷺城とまでいわなくても、White Castle としておいても良いだろう。

いずれにしても、この訳は暫定的な物である。臥龍を Lying Dragon 躍馬を Jumping Horse にしておいたが、スー族かシャイアン族の酋長のイメージを外国人に持たれるかもしれない。よくてカンフー映画の主役であろう。他の訳を参考にしたりして英語で解説するコツを覚えなくてはいけない。追々英語の注釈を付けたしていく予定である。White Castle も The Castle にした方がよかったのかもしれない。自信があるのは Great River ぐらいのものである。

楚王宮北正黄昏
白帝城西過雨痕
返照入江翻石壁
帰雲擁樹失山村
衰年肺病唯高枕
絶塞愁時早閉門
不可久留豺虎亂
南方実有未招魂

返照は江に入って石壁に翻り、
帰雲は樹を擁して山村を失う
衰年　肺を病んで唯だ枕を高くし
絶塞　時を愁えて早く門を閉ず
久しく豺虎の亂に留まる可からず
南方実に未だ招からざる魂あり


The Reflected Light

On the north Royal Villa is shadowed as the sun sinks lower.
On the west White Castle is wetted to betray a fresh shower.
Reflecting the sun, clouds on cliffy Great River shine bright,
Ascending the hill, clouds shroud a woody hamlet from sight.
Stricken with lingering chest troubles, I have been yet in bed.
Startled at an alarm bell, people bar the entire gates in dread.
How happy I could flee the wild where Wolves and Tigers roam!
But I am in a haunt where the uninvited souls await to go home.
