サンザシの花

アーサー王の妃ギネビアが騎士たちを引き連れて森に行き、五月の祭に欠かせない、（西洋）サンザシの花の枝を折ってきたところである。

この絵は Maroly の Le Morte d’Arthur Book 19 から題材をとったものである。

SO it befell in the month of May, Queen Guenever called unto her knights of the Table Round; and she gave them warning that early upon the morrow she would ride a-Maying into woods and fields beside Westminster. And I warn you that there be none of you but that he be well horsed, and that ye all be clothed in green, outher in silk outher in cloth;

さて５月のある日、女王ギネビアは王妃の騎士を呼び集め、翌早朝に５月の祭りにウェストミンスター近辺の森と野に出かけると告げた。我汝らに告ぐ、汝ら正しく騎乗せざるべからず。汝ら緑あるいは絹あるいは正規の服を着用せざるべからず。

画家は、ヴィクリア朝のイギリスに遅ればせながら登場したラファエル前派の忠実な後継者 John Collier (1850-1934) である。

彼は凡庸で時代遅れであるが、この絵によって王妃ギネビアの恋人の一人になったことは間違いない。ギネビア本にはからず掲載される絵である。

年下の崇拝者と思われる、花の冠をつけ、緑の服を着た若者を馬上から見下ろすギネビアは、やはり宮廷愛の登場人物であるように見える。「不倫の女王」ギネビアの持物は若き騎士である。



ずいぶん雰囲気は違うが、イギリスの田園詩人 John Clare の詩の冒頭を引用しよう。

Come, Queen of Months! in company
With all thy merry minstrelsy:
The restless cuckoo absent long
And twittering swallows chimney song;
And hedge row crickets notes that run
From every bank that fronts the sun;
And swarthy bees about the grass,
That stops with every bloom they pass,
And every minute every hour,
Keep teazing weeds that wear a flower...

汝、月の女王よ、来たれ！
賑わしき吟遊詩人どもを引き連れて。
郭公は久しぶりに気ぜわしく声を上げ、
燕は煙突から囀る。
蟋蟀の合唱隊の調べは
陽の当たる土手から響き渡る。
黒い蜜蜂は花を見つけては停まり、
休むことなく花をからかう。
