L'invitation au voyage

Mon enfant, ma soeur,
Songe à la douceur
D'aller là-bas vivre ensemble !
Aimer à loisir,
Aimer et mourir
Au pays qui te ressemble !
Les soleils mouillés
De ces ciels brouillés
Pour mon esprit ont les charmes

シャルル・ボードレールの「悪の華」に含まれている有名な詩というより、私にはアンリ・デュパルク（Henri Duparc）の有名な歌曲の歌詞である。この曲には思い出がある。最初ロスアンへレスのＬＰを買った。このＬＰ、第３行目の＜D'aller l醇A-bas vivre ensemble !>と彼女が絶唱するところで、びびる。何度カートリッジを取り替えても、だめである。今様のいい方をすれば、はまってしまった。この結果貧乏人としてはずいぶんオーディオに金をかけたが、このＬＰが良く聞こえることはなかった。これは静電気によるノイズがなく、耐久性があるというふれこみで、新しい材質の赤いレコード盤を東芝だったかが採用したのだが、その結果再生がうまく行かなかった。まもなくこれは廃れてしまった。

その後ＣＤの時代になってアメリンク他ソプラノの歌唱で不愉快な思いをすることもなくなったが、この曲の入ったロスアンへレスのＣＤは持っていない。ウェブを見ると、彼女がなくなったからであろうか、４枚組のＣＤも売られており、「旅への誘い」もあるようだ。びびらない彼女の「旅への誘い」をきいてみたい気はする。フランスのサロン・音楽の愛好者にしてみれば、アメリンクも引退したようだ。一つの時代の終わりのようで寂しい。

このフランス語の詩の英訳もずいぶん躊躇したが、冒頭の部分はだいぶ誤魔化して英訳もどきにたどり着いた。それ以降の詩の意味は大体分かっているが、私が心がけている韻を踏んだ英訳にうまくなっている自信はない。また修正するとしてひとまず投稿することにした。一応満足できるか、自分の英訳になれて何とも思わなくなるには時間がかかりそうだ。最後は一番大事な部分だが出来が悪いように思う。

絵であるが、この詩にインスピレーションを与えた女性としていろいろ読んでみた。この詩は Marie Daubrun という女優あるいは高級娼婦との関係から生まれたとされている。彼女は私が以前ブログで採り上げたボードレールの詩 Chant d'automn にも登場してくると注釈には記されている。

私はそれを知る前に下で見たマティスのこの詩の挿絵から、陽がふりそそぐカリブ海の島を連想した。

この挿絵から、フランスの植民地のクレオールの血をひいた混血の素性と性格の良くない Jeanne Duval という女性との関係を連想した。彼女の肖像は下にある。ボードレール同様素行の良くないマネが肖像を描いている。

ボードレールはインドに旅し、嵐に遭い、フランスの植民地の島に滞在したことがある。その時の記憶が「旅への誘い」に影響したという先入観から訳詩をした。

フランス植民地の肌の黒い女性への趣味と、旅に出ようという題材から、ここは私の好みもあるが、ゴーギャンの愛人に登場してもらうことにした。この絵の彼女はほぼ純血種のポリネシアンであり、Jeanne Duval のように混血ではないが、二人とも身持ちの悪いフランス人の異国趣味の対象になったという共通点がある。

後記：訳し終わって、この旅の目的地はカリブ海のフランス植民地化もしれないが、運河や町といった言葉から、不倫の恋人たちに寛容な都市ヴェネツイアかもしれないと思うようになった。ヴェネツイアは単なる観光地ではない。ヴェネツイアに駆け落ちした有名人の名前を調べてみよう。ボードレールの異国が退廃のヴェネツイアであるとすれば、下の絵もまんざらではない。
