Seven Times Two. – Romance

You bells in the steeple, ring, ring out your changes,
How many soever they be,
And let the brown meadow-lark's note as he ranges
Come over, come over to me.

Yet birds' clearest carol by fall or by swelling
No magical sense conveys,
And bells have forgotten their old art of telling
The fortune of future days.

"Turn again, turn again," once they rang cheerily,
While a boy listened alone;
Made his heart yearn again, musing so wearily
All by himself on a stone.

Poor bells! I forgive you; your good days are over,
And mine, they are yet to be;
No listening, no longing shall aught, aught discover
You leave the story to me.

The foxglove shoots out of the green matted heather
Preparing her hoods of snow;
She was idle, and slept till the sunshiny weather:
Oh! children take long to grow.

I wish and I wish that the spring would go faster,
Nor long summer bide so late;
And I could grow on like the foxglove and aster,
For some things are ill to wait.

I wait for the day when dear hearts shall discover,
While dear hands are laid on my head;
"The child is a woman, the book may close over,
For all the lessons are said."

I wait for my story,--the birds can not sing it,
Not one, as he sits on the tree;
The bells cannot ring it, but long years, oh, bring it!
Such as I wish it to be.

教会の塔の鐘さん、いつもとちがう調子で鳴らせてちょうだい
いくつでも鳴らせてちょうだい。
ヒバリが飛びまわってさえずるときの調子を
かえてほしいわ。

でもヒバリのさえずりの上がり下がりに
なにもかわったところはないわ。
鐘さんは未来を占う鳴らし方を
もう忘れてしまったのね。

「もう一度、もう一度鳴らして」鐘さんが陽気に鳴れば
一人で聞いていた男の子がいたわ。
あの子はまたあこがれ、独り石の上で
物思いにふけっていたものだわ。

かわいそうな鐘さん、でもいいわよ、あなたは齢をとったのね、
でも私はまだこれからよ。
鐘の音に聞き入る人もあこがれる人もいないわ、
あなたはこれまでのお話をしてくれたのね。

フォックスグローブはヒースの野に芽を出し
雪帽子を編んでいるわ。
この花は怠けて太陽の夏まで眠っているの、
ああ！子供が成長するのに時間がかかるわね。

春ははやくすぎていったらいいのに
夏もいつまでも続いてほしくないわ。
フォックスグローブやアスターのように成長したいわ、
なにかが待ち遠しくてしかたないもの。

やさしい手が私の頭にふれて
やさしい心を感じる日がまちどうしいわ。
「もうすべて教えたから、本はもう閉じなさい、
この娘は一人前の女になった。」

私の物語の始まりがまちどうしいわ、鳥には歌えない物語、
木にとまっていては歌えない物語の始まりが。
鐘さんにはならせない、けどすっとそのままでいいわ！
私の物語にはそのほうがいいの。


韻の構造はまったく７かける１のときと同じである。ちなみにジーンはイギリスでもアメリカでも非常に人気があり、ベストセラー作家になった。彼女は傲慢になることなく、ビクトリア朝の模範的なレディーであった。印税収入を慈善活動に気前よくつかった。慈善活動に熱心な女性にありがちな嫌味もなく、礼儀作法も申し分なかったそうである。この模範的な女性、詩もお上品であるし、どうも現代ではかっての人気はないみたいだが、エディス・ホールデンのような女性には崇拝されたのであろう。
