L'azur

De l'éternel azur la sereine ironie
Accable, belle indolemment comme les fleurs,
Le poëte impuissant qui maudit son génie
À travers un désert stérile de Douleurs.

Fuyant, les yeux fermés, je le sens qui regarde
Avec l'intensité d'un remords atterrant,
Mon âme vide. Où fuir? Et quelle nuit hagarde
Jeter, lambeaux, jeter sur ce mépris navrant?

Brouillards, montez! Versez vos cendres monotones
Avec de longs haillons de brume dans les cieux
Qui noiera le marais livide des automnes
Et bâtissez un grand plafond silencieux!

Et toi, sors des étangs léthéens et ramasse
En t'en venant la vase et les pâles roseaux,
Cher Ennui, pour boucher d'une main jamais lasse
Les grands trous bleus que font méchamment les oiseaux.

Encor! que sans répit les tristes cheminées
Fument, et que de suie une errante prison
Éteigne dans l'horreur de ses noires traînées
Le soleil se mourant jaunâtre à l'horizon!

Le Ciel est mort. Vers toi, j'accours! donne, ô matière,
L'oubli de l'Idéal cruel et du Péché
À ce martyr qui vient partager la litière
Où le bétail heureux des hommes est couché,

Car j'y veux, puisque enfin ma cervelle, vidée
Comme le pot de fard gisant au pied d'un mur,
N'a plus l'art d'attifer la sanglotante idée,
Lugubrement bâiller vers un trépas obscur...

En vain! l'Azur triomphe, et je l'entends qui chante
Dans les cloches. Mon âme, il se fait voix pour plus
Nous faire peur avec sa victoire méchante,
Et du métal vivant sort en bleus angelus!

Il roule par la brume, ancien et traverse
Ta native agonie ainsi qu'un glaive sûr;
Où fuir dans la révolte inutile et perverse?
Je suis hanté. L'Azur! l'Azur! l'Azur! l'Azur!

蒼天

永遠の蒼天の晴朗な皮肉は
花のようにものうく美麗であり
「苦悩」の不毛な砂漠を貫いて
自分の天分を呪う才能を呪う無力の詩人を圧倒する。

目をとじて逃げる僕は、蒼空が驚くべき
一種の強度の悔恨で僕の空虚な心をみつめる
のを感じる。どこへ逃げようか。またどんな物凄い
夜がこの悲痛な軽蔑の上にぼろくそに投げられるか？

霧上がれ！霧の長いぼろ切れと一緒に
お前の単調な灰燼をぶちまけよ
秋の鉛色の沼がやがてあの空の中へ
そして静寂な偉大な天井を作れ

そして親愛の「倦怠」よ、お前、地獄の池から出て
来るとき泥と青白い葦を集めてこい
意地悪の鳥どもが作るあの青い穴を
つかれることのない手でふさいでしまうために。

なお！悲しい煙突が休みなく煙を吹くことだ
そして煤煙に漂う一つの牢獄がその棚引く
暗黒の恐怖の中で、地平線に黄色くなって
死にかけている太陽を消してしまうことだ！

―　「天」は死んだ　―　おお物質よ、君の方へ僕は駆け出す！
人間の家畜がねている敷きわらの
分譲を願うこの殉難者には
残酷な「理想」や「罪」の意識の放棄をゆるせ。

とは、僕の脳髄はついに壁の下に転がる
白粉瓶のように空になり、すすり泣く見解を
飾りたてる術ももうもっていないから
暗黒な侵入者へ寝て陰鬱に欠伸をしたいからだ。

無益だ！「蒼天」は勝ち誇る。それが鐘の中で歌うのが
きこえる。僕の魂よ、蒼天は声となって
その意地悪の勝利で僕らをますますおそれさす
それはまた金属から生きて青い祈りの鐘にでてくる！

蒼天は昔から露を通してめぐり確かな剣のように、
僕の魂よ、君の生来の苦悩をつきさすから
無益な背徳の反逆では逃げるところなし
僕はとても疲れている。蒼天！蒼天！蒼天！

The Azure

The serene irony of the Azure pure
Overwhelms as beautiful flowers indolently allure,
The impotent poet who his gift laments
Through a sterile desert of Torments.

Fleeing with my eyes shut, I sense a glance
Cast upon my empty heart with intensive regret,
Where to flee? What haggard night in shreds can I jet
Against the Azure looking down askance?

Fogs, climb! Scattter thy monotonous dust
With fogs in the sky, a long cloth worn down
That the pale autumn marsh will drown,
And build a quiet great vault to the utmost.

And you, come out from the hellish pond
And gather mud and pale reeds, dear Ennui,
To fill up the great blue hole yond
That the birds dig nastily.

Still! Restlessly the sad chimneys distribute
Smoke and a wandring prison in soot
Extinguishes in horror of the black trail
The yellowish sun dying frail!

The Sky’s dead. – Oh material, Forgive e’en
The oblivion of cruel Ideal and Sin
To the martyr who willingly shares
The litter with happy tamed mares.

For I want it, since my brain, poor
Like a powder pot lying on the floor
Can no more adorn my sobbing core!
Yawn sadly toward a death in obscure.

In vain! The Azure triumphs, and delivers
Alert in the bell. My soul! It gives shivers
At the sound to frighten us in vicious prime,
And comes out of metal in blue chime!

It rolls through old mist, and dashes toward
Your native agony like a sharp-edged sword;
Can I find in futile revolt where to flee?
The Azure! The Azure! The Azure! It haunts me.
