Le Soir sur L'eau

La noire gondole se glissait le long des palais de marbre, comme un bravo qui court à quelque aventure de nuit, un stylet et une lanterne sous sa cape,

Un cavalier et une dame y causaient d'amour:—«Les orangers si parfumés, et vous si indifférente! Ah! signora, vous êtes une statue dans un jardin!

—Ce baiser est-il d'une statue, mon Georgio? pourquoi boudez-vous?—Vous m'aimez donc?—Il n'est pas au ciel une étoile qui ne le sache, et tu ne le sais pas?

—Quel est ce bruit?—Rien, sans doute le clapotement des flots qui monte et descend une marche des escaliers de la Giudecca.

—Au secours! au secours!—Ah! mère du sauveur, quelqu'un qui se noie!—Écartez-vous; il est confessé», dit un moine qui parut sur la terrasse.

Et la noire gondole força de rames, se glissant le long des palais de marbre comme un bravo qui revient de quelque aventure de nuit, un stylet et une lanterne sous sa cape.

The Eve on Water

The black gondola is gliding along the marble palaces,
like a killer who goes in haste for his night adventure,
a knife and a lantern under his mantle.

A lady and her beau whispers sweet nothings.
- << You smell orange, but you are so indifferent!
Oh your lady, you are a statue in a garden!

-Is my kiss statue-like, my Georgio?
Why are you so snobbish? - Can I understand that you love me?
- Any star in the heaven knows my simcere love, and you know it.

-I hear a sound. - I'm sure, the wave laps
against a flight of stairs to the appartment.

- Help! Help! - Oh Saint Mary! Somebody is drowned!
- Don't mind: He is confessed>>,
said a monk who appeared on the terrace.

And the black gondola, pulled on the oar, is liding along the marble palaces
like a killer who has come back from his night adventure,
a knife and a lantern under his mantle.

運河の夜

黒いゴンドラが大理石の大邸宅にそってス－ッス－ッと行く。
夜の仕事に急ぐ殺し屋のように
ナイフとカンテラをマントにかくし。

貴婦人と愛人が他愛もないおしゃべりをしている
「オレンジの香りがするげど、あなたは冷たい
ああ、奥様あなたは庭の石像みたいだ！」

「まあわたしのキスが石のように冷たいとでも、ジョルジオ？まあなんてことをおっしゃるの？」
「ではあなたはわたしを愛しているとおっしゃるのですか？」「空のお星さまがすべてご存じのことよ、わかっているくせに」

「なにか音がするわ」「アパルトマンの階段をうつ波でしょう」
「助けて！助けて！」「ああマリア様、だれか溺れている」
「かまうことはない。その男は懺悔をすませている」
とテラスに現れた坊主がいう。

ふたたび櫓を入れ、黒いゴンドラは大理石の大邸宅にそってス－ッス－ッと行く。
夜の仕事からもどってきた殺し屋のように
ナイフとカンテラをマントにかくし。

ベルトラン

一年ばかり前に英訳したLe Soir sur L'Eau に和訳をつけ、以前よりはいい写真を見つけたので掲載する。ベルトランは詩集「夜のガスパール」を書いて不遇のうちに若くして死んだ散文詩人である。この詩は「夜のガスパール」に含まれている。

この退廃の都ヴェニスの不倫の詩は昔たしか「フランス詩集」とかいうタイトルの文庫本にはいっていた。ただ最近の岩波の「フランス名詩選」には彼の名前の詩はのっていない。いずれにせよかなり記憶に残っており、その記憶に会わせて訳詞したものである。擬声語があったようなきがするのだが、それがス－ッス－ッであったかどうか？

ラベルがこの詩集から有名な「夜のガスパール」というピアノ曲を書いているが、その素材になったのはベルトランの三つの詩である。私はたいしたＣＤコレクターではないが、ラヴェルの「夜のガスパール」だけは何枚かもっている。ラヴェルは超名人芸を要求するピアノ曲を書いてみようという動機だったそうである。この詩は書いても超越技巧曲にはならなかっただろうか？名人ラベルならこの詩を絵画的音像に仕立てることは可能だったような気がするのだが。
