静かで我慢強い蜘蛛 -- ホイットマン

選者は私が「今日の詩」のメイル送付の申し込みをしてから始めてアメリカを代表する詩人ホィットマンを送ってきた。私は彼の「草の葉」を図書館でめくったことはあるが、英語を読んだのは始めてである。


A Noiseless Patient Spider

A NOISELESS, patient spider,
I mark’d, where, on a little promontory, it stood, isolated;
Mark’d how, to explore the vacant, vast surrounding,
It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself;
Ever unreeling them―ever tirelessly speeding them.

Surrounded, surrounded, in measureless oceans of space,

静かで我慢強い蜘蛛
私は場所に注目した　蜘蛛は小さな岬の上にひっそりといた。
仕事ぶりに注目した　人気のない広い場所を探っていた
蜘蛛は次から次へと糸を吐き出していた。
巻き戻すことなく　―　倦むことなく繰り出したいた。

そしてお前がいる所といえば
計り知れぬ広がりの大海に囲まれ
絶え間なく見つめては危険を冒しては投げ　―　結びつける場所を探している。
お前が入り用な橋ができるまで　―　柔軟な錨が止まるまで
お前が投げた蜘蛛の糸がどこかを掴むまで　ああなんと！

ホイットマンといえば幕末の遣米使節団を褒め称えた詩を中学生の頃習った気がします。教科書の編集者はわれわれに誇りを持たせる意図でその詩を掲載したと思いますが、私たちの先生は適切に解説してくれなかったような気がします。
