乞食どうしの願い -- イェーツ

「今日の詩」はイェーツの「乞食どうしの願い」である。最近イェーツが多いが、今回もケルト神話ではない。乞食の願いを綺麗な韻文でまとめている。彼らはいろんな願いを口にしながら結局は自由を選択する。詩人が書くほど「自由の民」の生活が自由であるかどうか？


Beggar To Beggar Cried

"Time to put off the world and go somewhere
And find my health again in the sea air,'
Beggar to beggar cried, being frenzy-struck,
"And make my soul before my pate is bare.-
"And get a comfortable wife and house
To rid me of the devil in my shoes,'

"And the worse devil that is between my thighs.'

乞食どうしの願い

「いいかげん世間からずらかり、海にでも出かけて
いい空気をすって威勢よくなりもんだ」
乞食どうし狂ったように大声をだした。
「ハゲになっちまうまでに丈夫になって –
気だてのいいかみさんと家をもって
靴にすみつく悪魔をおいだしてぇ」
乞食どうし狂ったように大声をだした。
「俺のまたに悪魔が！
かわいい娘を女房にしたいけど
べっぴんでなくてもいい　―　がまんするさ」
乞食どうし狂ったように大声をだした。
「でもカガミには悪魔がいるもんな」
「女は金がなくてもいいさ　乞食はカユミにおわれ
金持ちはカネにおわれる」
乞食どうし狂ったように大声をだした。
「しゃれた話ができなくてもいい」
「やっぱり気楽なのがいいさ
夜になって庭がしずまると」

詩は全編１０音節の２０行からなり、脚韻に関しては４行ごとに工夫が凝らしてある。３、７，１１，１５、１９の各行にfrenzy-struckが来ている。この語の前の２行と後の１行に合計３語同韻の言葉が配置されている。各行の韻を調べて頂きたい。
