Nor perchance, If I were not thus taught, should I the more
Suffer my genial spirits to decay:
For thou art with me here upon the banks
Of this fair river; thou, my dearest Friend,

　偶然ではない。かく教えられた
私の陽気な心が萎えたとしよう。
君は私とともに、この美しき川の
堤に佇む。最愛の友である君よ
親愛なる友よ。私は君の声で
私の昔の心の言葉を捉え
君の目から差し込む光の下で
私の昔の喜びを朗読する。ああ！しばしは
君の中に私の昔を見ることによう！
私の親愛なる妹よ！私は自然が
自然を愛する心を裏切らないことを知り
この祈りを捧げる。
幾星霜かの人生を通して
喜びから喜びへと導くのが
自然の特権である。なぜなら自然は
われらの内なる心に知らせ
静けさと美しさで感銘を与え
高遠な思想の糧を恵む。毒舌や
軽率な判断や自己中心的な冷笑や
親切心のかけらもない挨拶や
日常の生活における退屈なる交際を
私たちに蔓延させず、見るもの全てが
祝福さるべきとの楽しき信頼に
応えてくれ。だから月をして
独歩する君を照らしめよ。
さらに山から霧を含んだ風をして
君を吹かしめよ。何年かの歳月で
猛々しい狂気も成熟して厳粛なる喜びとなり
君の心は全ての美しき形の邸宅となり
君の思い出は、たとえ孤独かつ不安であり
苦悩や悲嘆に満ちようとも
あらゆる美しき音とあらゆる調和の
住処となり、君の資産となり

この快適な小川の辺に立ったことを忘れるだろう。
昔から自然の崇拝者である私はこの地に来て
あむことなく祈りを捧げよう。いや
温かき愛の心で、熱烈にして神聖なる
愛の心で。そうすれば君はもはや忘れないであろう！
幾たびかの放浪、幾星霜の不在の後も
峻険なる森、見上ぐる岩、牧歌の風景が
私にはもちろん、これら風景自身にとっても
君にとっても貴重であることを。


ワーズワス

俳句や、短歌など日本独特の短詩は鑑賞したりしますが、こうして詩を鑑賞する機会を得られることは悦びです。教科書的知識でしかなかった詩人の詩。言うも更なり、あたりまえでしょうが、いい詩です。やはり人間にとって＜自然＞とはすべてを反照する存在であるようです。

私のワーズワスは英語教科書の「水仙」ぐらいしか記憶に残っておりません。ロマン派宣言とも言うべきこの詩は、読めないことはありません。ただ訳すとなると、ロマンチックな修飾語が多くて、日本語の語彙がためされている感じで大変でした。これは超有名な詩ですから、一段落したら図書館に行って権威ある翻訳を参照してみたいと思います。
