Ode to Venice

III

Glory and Empire! once upon these towers
With Freedom - godlike Triad! how ye sate!
The league of mightiest nations, in those hours
When Venice was an envy, might abate,
But did not quench, her spirit; in her fate
All were enwrapp'd: the feasted monarchs knew
And loved their hostess, nor could learn to hate,
Although they humbled - with the kingly few
The many felt, for from all days and climes
She was the voyager's worship; - even her crimes
Were of the softer order - born of Love,
She drank no blood, nor fatten'd on the dead,
But gladden'd where her harmless conquests spread;
For these restore the Cross, that from above
Hallow'd her sheltering banners, which incessant
Flew between earth and the unholy Crescent,
Which, if it waned and dwindled, Earth may thank
The city it has clothed in chains, which clank
Now, creaking in the ears of those who owe
The name of Freedom to her glorious struggles;
Yet she but shares with them a common woe,
And call'd the "kingdom" of a conquering foe, -
But knows what all - and, most of all, we know -
With what set gilded terms a tyrant juggles!

III

栄光と帝国！この二つの塔の上に
自由があった ― 神性の三位！汝ら如何に座す！
大強国の同盟も、ヴェニスが羨望の的
である時代には緩んでいたろうが
ヴェニスの精神は衰えなかった。全世界は
ヴェニスの運命に心を奪われた。宴席の君主たちは
謙虚であり ― 尊大なる者は僅かであったが
宴の主催者を理解し、愛し、憎まなかった。
どの時代においても、どこの国の人々からも
ヴェニスは旅行者の聖地と思われた ― 犯罪すらも
穏やかなものであり ― 色恋沙汰であった。
ヴェニスは血を飲まず、死者で太ることなく
喜ぶときは無害な征服が拡大したときである。
「十字架」を復活し、「十字架」は
ヴェニスのお守りの旗を聖別した。旗は
絶え間なく、大地と「三日月」の合間で翻り
「三日月」が欠けて小さくなると、大地はこの
鎖で繋がれた都市に感謝し、鎖はガチャと鳴り
ヴェニスの栄光ある闘争のおかげで
名ばかりの自由を得た人々に耳障りになる。
だがヴェニスには彼らと共通の敵があり
「王国」と名乗る拡張を続ける敵であるが ―
ヴェニスは知っている ― 我らすらも知っている ―
独裁者に偽の金の言葉を封ずる方法も！

バイロン

下手な訳を多少補うために私なりの解釈

「十字架」→　キリスト教
「三日月」→　イスラム教一般をさすが、ヴェニスはトルコ軍と戦いトルコ軍の進出を阻止している。その後のトルコの衰退の一因になったことは確かである。
「王国」→　バイロンが憎んでいた母国イギリスであろう。
