人生賛歌 -- ロングフェロー

「今日の詩」は１９世紀アメリカの詩人ロングフェローの「人生の賛歌」である。非常に人気のあった詩人の「詩」だそうである。若きアメリカの文化的指導者となったこの詩人。さすがハーバード大学の教授になっただけのことはあり、きわめて教訓的である。「今日の詩」は堅い感じだが、教科書向きの内容である。懐かしむ世代がいるのであろう。

A Psalm Of Life

Tell me not in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou are, to dust thou returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow
Find us farther than today.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world's broad field of battle,

人生賛歌

人生は虚しき夢！
などと哀れな調子で語るな
眠れる魂は死せる魂
実体と像は違うのだ。

人生は真実であり！本質だ！
墓は目標ではない。
汝塵より出でて塵に戻るが
魂について語ってはいない。

喜びと悲しみは
究極の目的でも過程でもない。
行動により明日は更に
今日よりも前進している。

芸術は長く、時の経過は速い
頑健で勇敢なる心臓も
抑えた太鼓のごとく
墓への葬送を打っている。

現世の広き戦場で
人生の露営で
従順なる家畜になるな！

ロングフェロー

脚韻に関しては完璧な構造を持っている。全詩節において

[a, b, a, b]

となっている。

さらに音節数

[8, 7, 8, 7]

にすべく努力が払われている。

写真はケンブリッジとボストンを結ぶ橋である。お堅い感じのロングフェローがこの橋を通って「彼女」のもとにせっせとを通った。念願叶って「彼女」は結婚を承諾した。今ではロングフェロー橋と呼ばれている。近年改築されたが多少は面影を残す配慮はなされている。

世の成功を勝ち得た経営者、実業家の金科玉条、座右の銘にしそうな詩です。文句をつけるいわれもなく、至極真っ当なことばですが。こうもストレートに謳われると・・と言ったところで。経営者が好んで謳い、引き出す＜青春＞を謳うウルマンの詩の如くで、いささか気恥ずかしい。ここが天邪鬼のダメなところと了解しているのですが。
