風と雨の間に -- ハーディー

「今日の詩」はトマス・ハーディーの「風と雨の間に」である。先日紹介した「私の墓を掘っているのはあなたなの？」で、ハーディーは人の情けの当てにならないことを詩にした。今回は「人生の儚さ」が内容であり、哀歓で結んでいる点ではよく似ている。これでハーディーの詩の特徴を断定してはいけないが、作品としては達者な仕上がりである。

During Wind And Rain

They sing their dearest songs--
He, she, all of them--yea,
Treble and tenor and bass.
And one to play;
With the candles mooning each face....
Ah, no; the years O!
How the sick leaves reel down in throngs!

They clear the creeping moss--
Elders and juniors--aye,
Making the pathways neat
And the garden gay;
And they build a shady seat....
Ah, no; the years, the years;
See, the white storm-birds wing across!

They are blithely breakfasting all--
Men and maidens--yea,
Under the summer tree,
With a glimpse of the bay,
While pet fowl come to the knee....

They change to a high new house,

Clocks and carpets and chairs

みなは楽しげに歌っている ―
男も女も全員で ― それも
ソプラノ、テノール、バス
一人は楽器
ローソクで互いに顔を見つめ会う・・・
ああだが、いつかは！
枯れ葉が一面に散る！

みな生えた苔をむしっている ―
老いも若きも ― そう
小路を掃いて
庭を綺麗にしている。
みなで木陰に席を設け・・・
ああだが、いつか、いつか
ごらん、あらし鳥が飛んで行くよ！

みな楽しげに朝食をとっている ―
若い男女も ― それも
夏の木の下から
入江を眺め
小鳥が膝に来る
ああだが、いつかは！
バラが朽ちて壁から落ちる。

みなで新築の高級住宅に入居する
夫婦と家族全員 ― そう
時計、 絨毯
芝生の椅子
家族の豪華な調度品・・・
ああだが、いつか、いつか
雨垂れが刻んだ名前にしみ込む。

ハーディー

詩人とは厄介な人種といわれそう。実相は儚くそうなんだけれど・・・。この・・・で真っ当な人は哀しく愉しく生きているのでしょう。この絵はいいですね。

厄介ですね。でも厄介な人種は詩人だけではありません。この絵は私も大好きな絵です。モネの１８７３年の作となっています。向こう側の白い服を着た女性がモデルだった奥さんのカミーユです。モデル代をはらうより結婚した方が安上がりというわけでもないでしょうが、手前の坊やはモネの「できちゃった」ジャンです。まだ売れる絵描きではなかったのですが、結構この昼食豪華ですね。カミーユは質屋がよいしながら間もなく死んでいます。モネのモデルになるために生まれてきた女性です。
