死よ驕るなかれ -- ジョン・ダン

「今日の詩」はジョン・ダンの「死よ驕るなかれ」である。「誰がために鐘は鳴る」と言うのは、小説、映画の題名として採用されたが、ジョン・ダンの説教の一節であるという話は聞いてはいた。実際に彼の英語を訳したのは今日が初めてである。

「死」はえらそうな顔をしているが、何も怖くない。人間は死んでから安らぎの未来がある。ところが人間が死ねば「死」の意味はなくなる。「死」には未来はない。すなわち「死」に待ち受けるのは「死」だけである。これだけ悪態をついて突っ張っているところを見ると、ジョン・ダンも「死」が怖くて仕方がないのだろう。彼はどんな最後を遂げたのだろう。

Death be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not soe,
For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill mee.

From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,

And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,

ジョン・ダン

詩の構造はペトラルカのソネット（１４行詩）である。最初の３詩節の４行はは [a, b, b, a] を守り。最後の２行は同一韻であることが要求される。最後の２行は若干気になるが、当時は許されたのであろう。全行１０音節であり、形式的には傑作である。

ジョン・ダンのように強がりを言っても最後は醜態をさらすだろう私は ピーテル・ブリューゲルの傑作「死の勝利」を今日の絵にした。
