私はただ座って、世間の悲しみ、抑圧と恥辱を眺めている。
私は若い男が犯したことを後悔して苦しみ、嗚咽するのを聞いている。

長生きすると、見なくて済むものを見る羽目にもなる。といった哀しい呟きのようにも聴こえます。「見て、聞き、沈黙を守っている。」たぶん、それは諦念の哀しい沈黙なのでしょうか。いい顔です。

この写真は最晩年のものでっしょう。立っていた写真をさけたのですが、座っている写真にしました。詩の制作年が分かりません。彼の詩集はすべて「草の葉」ですが、詩集の増補という形をとりました。専門家には分かっているのでしょう。
私は諦観と同時に以前南北戦争で「太鼓を打ち鳴らせ」を書いた戦闘的なウィットマンも感じます。自分も含めて他人の不幸に対する世間の冷淡さを告発しているようにも取れるのですが。
