ファジー・ワジー -- キップリング

「今日の詩」はかなり前に選者が送ってきたものである。帝国主義者キップリングに対する疑問は消えない。だが考えてみると、ヴィクトリア朝時代に労働者の待遇改善を迫った「社会主義者」も帝国主義者だったような気がした。大英帝国を支えるイギリス労働者たちの劣悪な労働環境を批判した人たちは、大英帝国の未来に懸念を抱いていただけである。植民地の原住民の文化や民族的誇りなど気にしていたとは思えない。

キップリングを擁護するものではないが、彼は当時として特に奇矯な人物ではなかった。彼の詩から帝国主義の実態と本質の証言が得られるかもしれない。相変わらず苦戦したときは勇猛果敢な敵を賛美し、それにより最終的な勝利を収めたイギリスを高めるというのがキップリングの手法である。

今回も、労働者階級の言葉と軍隊用語の訳に私が所有するありとあらゆる辞書を動員した。自信が持てない部分がいくつか出てきた。今までキップリングの訳でいちばん苦労した。誤訳は当然あるものと思う。たびたび修正して後日模範的な訳を読んでみたい。

なお題名のファジー・ワジーであるが、イギリスの植民地戦争で原住民が唯一「局所的勝利」を収めたスーダンの戦士の髪型に由来するという。キップリングの詩で有名になったが、ウィキペディアに写真があったのでこれを今日の写真とする。

Fuzzy-Wuzzy

We've fought with many men acrost the seas,
An' some of 'em was brave an' some was not:
The Paythan an' the Zulu an' Burmese;
But the Fuzzy was the finest o' the lot.

勇気のある奴もいたが、臆病な奴もいた。
パターン人、ズールー族、ビルマ人。
だがファジーが何といっても一番さ。
連中に敵う奴はいやしなかった。
薮の中に潜んで俺達の馬の腱を切り
スア‘キム’では俺達の見張りを切り殺し
俺達の軍隊とキャット・アン・バンジョーを鳴らした。
さてスーダンに今いるファジー・ワジーに言うが
貴様は遅れて哀れな野蛮人だが、第一級の戦士だ。
俺達は証言してもいいぜ、署名がいるなら
貴様がその気になれば、俺達はいつでも書くぜ。

俺達はカイバル峠では一か八かだったし
ボーア人にはひどい目にあったよ
ビルマのイラワジでは冷や汗かいたし
ズールーの部隊は最新式の俺たちを痛めつけたよ
でも連中から頂戴したものは、ファジーに比べれば
ただのゲンコツ一発みたいなものさ。
わが軍は陣地を断固維持したと新聞は書いているが
一人一人比較してみると、ファジーは俺達を圧倒したよ。
そこでファジー・ワジーと女房と子供に言うが
貴様達を打ち負かせという命令に俺達は従ったのさ。
貴様達をマティーニで酔わせたのは汚い手だと思うよ。
不利でもファジー・ワジー、貴様達は方陣を突破した。

連中には新聞があるわけでなし
勲章も褒美ももらえないのに
長い刀を二本使いこなす
あのファジーの武術はたいしたものさ。
棺桶の蓋の盾とシャベルの槍で
連中が薮の中を飛び回って
突撃するファジーで狂った日のことは
丈夫な兵隊でも一年間は忘れない。
