足長蝿 -- イェーツ

「今日の詩」は、イェーツの「足長蠅」である。不思議な詩であるが、物語性があり、読者を飽きさせないのはさすがである。イェーツは色々詩の型を工夫して研究者に論文ネタを提供したものだ。形式的には偶数行に韻を踏んでいるが、特に凝った技は遣っていない。

二人の有名な男性と一人の無名の女性を登場させて、それぞれが音をたてずに作業に打ち込み、「想いを巡らせている」。登場人物のエピソードの終わりには次の二行の節が挿入されている。

（小川を飛ぶ足長蝿のように
彼/彼女は静か想いを巡らす）

Long-Legged Fly

That civilisation may not sink,
Its great battle lost,
Quiet the dog, tether the pony
To a distant post;
Our master Caesar is in the tent
Where the maps are spread,
His eyes fixed upon nothing,
