愚かにも愛の気まぐれを止めるな。
愛が与え奪い去る物の中で

スティーヴンソン

私はスティーヴンソンの伝記を例によりウィキペディアで調べた。多少笑えてくる。ゴシップめいた話で恐縮だが、スティーヴンソンの最愛の妻は離婚した女性である。彼女の夫は「去る者は追わず」というわけで、すんなり離婚に応じてくれた男性である。この詩はスティーヴンソンの信念を述べたものだろうが、スティーヴンソン夫人の前夫の行動規範である。
