奇跡 -- ホイットマン

「今日の詩」の選者が送ってきたのは、ホイットマンの「奇跡」である。彼の創作した詩集「草の葉」は、アメリカ人のイメージを植え付けた。今日の詩も彼の肯定的な態度を表明した典型的な作品である。顧みて気恥ずかしくなる「アメリカ人」もいるのではないだろうか？この詩を１９００年刊行の「草の葉」から採録されたとするサイトがあったが、制作の時期を保証するものかどうか。

Miracles

WHY! who makes much of a miracle?
As to me, I know of nothing else but miracles,
Whether I walk the streets of Manhattan,
Or dart my sight over the roofs of houses toward the sky,
Or wade with naked feet along the beach, just in the edge of the water,
Or stand under trees in the woods,
Or talk by day with any one I love―or sleep in the bed at night with any one I love,
Or sit at table at dinner with my mother,
Or look at strangers opposite me riding in the car,
Or watch honey-bees busy around the hive, of a summer forenoon,
Or animals feeding in the fields,
Or birds―or the wonderfulness of insects in the air,
Or the wonderfulness of the sun-down―or of stars shining so quiet and bright,
Or the exquisite, delicate, thin curve of the new moon in spring;
Or whether I go among those I like best, and that like me best―mechanics, boatmen, farmers,
Or among the savans―or to the soiree―or to the opera,
Or stand a long while looking at the movements of machinery,
Or behold children at their sports,
Or the admirable sight of the perfect old man, or the perfect old woman,
Or the sick in hospitals, or the dead carried to burial,
Or my own eyes and figure in the glass;
These, with the rest, one and all, are to me miracles,
The whole referring―yet each distinct, and in its place.

To me, every hour of the light and dark is a miracle,
Every cubic inch of space is a miracle,
Every square yard of the surface of the earth is spread with the same,
Every foot of the interior swarms with the same;
Every spear of grass―the frames, limbs, organs, of men and women, and all that concerns them,
All these to me are unspeakably perfect miracles.

To me the sea is a continual miracle;
The fishes that swim―the rocks―the motion of the waves―the ships, with men in them,
What stranger miracles are there?

奇跡

エッ！誰が奇跡を理解しているかって？
私が知っている物は奇跡ばかり
マンハッタンの通りを歩いていても
屋根の向こうの空に視線を向けても
海岸の水際を裸足で歩いていても
森の木の下に立っていても
昼は好きな人としゃべり− 夜は好きな人とベッドで眠っていても
お母さんと卓を囲んで食事をしていても
車に乗りあわせた向いの人を見つめていても
夏の午前巣箱を回るミツバチを眺めていても
野原で草をはむ動物とか
鳥 − 昆虫の飛行の技とか
見事な日没 − 静かに光り輝く見事な星とか
春の新月 − 洗練され、優美な、細い曲線とか
私が大好きで、好いてくれる人たちに会いに行くとか − 機械工、船員、農夫とか
学者と一緒に過ごすとか − 音楽会 − オペラとか
機械の動きをじっと見つめているとか
遊んでいる子供達を見守るとか
立派な老人や立派な老婦人を尊敬の眼差しで見つめるとか
病院の病人や埋葬される死者とか
鏡に映る私自身の目や姿とか
以上とその他全てが私には奇跡。

私には光と闇の時間が奇跡
一インチ立方の空間が奇跡
一ヤード平方の平面が大地を埋め尽くし
一フィートの長さで部屋を埋め尽くし
草の芽一つが − 男と女の体格、手足、器官、これらに関係する物
これらは全て私には喩えようもなく完全な奇跡である。

海は私には永遠の奇跡だ。
泳ぐ魚 − 岩 − 波の動き − 男が乗り込んだ船
さて他にどんな奇跡があるだろう？
