死せる公爵夫人 -- ブラウニング

「今日の詩」はブラウニングの「死せる公爵夫人」である。歴史上ドラマティック・モノログの選集には選ばれる有名な詩だそうである。このような形式の詩は初めてである。英語版ウィキペディアにこの詩の解説があり、おかげで誤訳はかなり減ったはずである。

話者はイタリアの有名な貴族の当主である２５才のフェラーラ公爵アルフォンソ二世である。彼は新興のメディチ家の１４才の娘ルクレチアと結婚した。彼女は陽気な性格であるが、まだ若く無教養と婿殿に判断された。新興財閥の娘であり、名門貴族の奥方になるに相応しい教育を受けていなかったのであろう。彼女は３年後に死亡し、毒殺説の噂が立った。フェラーラ公爵は、その後神聖ローマ帝国の皇帝の娘であり、ティロルの伯爵の姪にあたるバーバラという女性との縁談に乗り気であった。

この詩はフェラーラ公爵がルクレチアの死後、縁談を持ってきた伯爵の家来と思われる人物に「死せる公爵夫人」の肖像画を見せる形で展開される。陽気で教養のない彼女が肖像画では極めて厳粛な顔付きである理由をフェラーラ公爵は説明し、伯爵の縁談に乗り気になり、上機嫌で客を持てなす所で終わっている。英雄韻で終始し、一行１０音節を守り、形式的に申し分なく、話も面白かった。

My Last Duchess

That's my last Duchess painted on the wall,
Looking as if she were alive. I call
That piece a wonder, now: Fr?? Pandolf's hands
Worked busily a day, and there she stands.
Will't please you sit and look at her? I said
"Fr?? Pandolf" by design, for never read
Strangers like you that pictured countenance,
The depth and passion of its earnest glance,
But to myself they turned (since none puts by
The curtain I have drawn for you, but I)
And seemed as they would ask me, if they durst,
How such a glance came there; so, not the first

Her husband's presence only, called that spot
Of joy into the Duchess' cheek: perhaps
Fr?? Pandolf chanced to say "Her mantle laps

Was courtesy, she thought, and cause enough
For calling up that spot of joy. She had
A heart ― how shall I say? ― too soon made glad,
Too easily impressed; she liked whate'er

The dropping of the daylight in the West,
The bough of cherries some officious fool

生きていたときとそっくりです。この作品を

公爵夫人の頬に喜びの跡が見えるのは。おそらく
フラ・パンドラフが「奥方様のガウンが手首に
重なりすぎています」とか「ほんのりとした紅が
奥方様の喉に沿って消えて行くのを巧みに描くのを
絵の具が拒んでおります」とか。このようなことが
妻は礼儀と考えていましたから、喜びの表情を
呼び起こした理由だと考えられます。妻は

− なんと申しましょうか？ − すぐに喜ぶ性質で

すぐに感動しました。妻は見るものすべて
好きになり、妻の視線はどこにも向きました。
なんでも同じでした！私が彼女の胸を気に入るのも
西方に沈んで行くときの太陽の光も
おせっかいな道化が果樹園に入り込み
彼女にお届けする桜桃の一枝も、彼女が
テラスで乗り回す騾馬も − どれもこれも
同じような賞賛の言葉をしゃべるか、少なくとも
顔は紅潮しました。彼女は皆に感謝しました −
それは良いとしても − どういうのか − まるで
彼女は九百年の昔からの家に生まれた私と他の人を
同列にしているようでした。かかる些細なことで
謙り下り咎める人など何処にいましょう？話術に長けた
人物なら − （私はその才はありません） − かかることに
「これとあれが気に入らぬ。こことあそこが間違っている」
と明確な意思表示されるでしょう − 彼女がちゃんとした
教育を受けているか、教養のない話を
皆とはしなく、謝るとかすればですが

− その時にでも謙るべきです、私は

謙ることはしません。たしかに彼女は私と会えば
笑いました。誰でも彼でも同じように
笑いかけ、次第にひどくなりました。私は命じましたら
全く笑わなくなりました。そこに立っている彼女は
生前のままです。さて行きませんか？それでは
階下の仲間にお会いしましょう。繰り返しますが
あなたのご主人の伯爵は気前のよさで
有名ですが、私の正当な持参金の要求が
認められるための充分な保証です。確かに
最初に誓いましたように、私が望んでいるのは
伯爵の美しい令嬢の人柄です。さて一緒に
下に参りましょう。ネプチューンが海馬を
手なずけているもので、珍品とされています。
