第二のトロイ -- イェーツ

「今日の詩」の選者は今日もまたイェーツの詩を送ってきた。題名は不適切かもしれないが「第二のトロイ」としておいた。またまた「彼女」にこだわった詩である。彼女とはモード・ゴーンに間違いないだろう。イェーツは生涯彼女を引きずってきたらしい。彼女はイェーツを振ったおかげで、トロイのヘレナに喩えられて後世に名を残した。女冥利に尽きるというものである。

No Second Troy

Why should I blame her that she filled my days
With misery, or that she would of late
Have taught to ignorant men most violent ways,
Or hurled the little streets upon the great.
Had they but courage equal to desire?
What could have made her peaceful with a mind
That nobleness made simple as a fire,
With beauty like a tightened bow, a kind
That is not natural in an age like this,
Being high and solitary and most stern?
Why, what could she have done, being what she is?
Was there another Troy for her to burn?

僕は彼女を咎めるつもりはない。彼女が
僕の日々を台なしにしたからといって
また最近無知な男たちに過激な手段を教唆し
貧民街から駆り出そうとしたからといって。
連中に願望ほどの強い勇気があるだろうか？
どうして彼女が平安でありえたであろう？
高貴さゆえにすぐに燃える単純な精神
このご時世には自然とは言い難い
ピンと張りつめた弓のような美貌
気位が高く、超然とし、決然としている。
この性格で彼女は一体何が出来たろう？
彼女に燃やすべき第二のトロイがあったろうか？
