僕のカゲ -- スティーヴンソン

「今日の詩」はスティーヴンソンの「子供の詩の園」の一遍「僕のカゲ」である。バージニア・ウルフから罵られた「お子様向けの文学者」のまさに「お子様向け」の詩である。スティーヴンソンにも言い分はあるはず。悔しかったら、バージニアも「お子様向け」の詩の一つでも書いてみろと言いたいところだが、反論する前に彼は死んでしまった。

My Shadow

From Child's Garden of Verses

I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow--
Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller like an india-rubber ball,
And he sometimes goes so little that there's none of him at all.

He hasn't got a notion of how children ought to play,
And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way.
He stays so close behind me, he's a coward you can see;
I'd think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me!

One morning, very early, before the sun was up,
I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup;
But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head,
Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.

僕のカゲ

子供の詩の園から

かわいいカゲがいつも僕にぴったりついて歩き
カゲがなんの役に立つかは、僕にはわからない。
カゲは頭のてっぺんから足のさきまで僕にそっくり。
僕がベッドに飛びこむ前に、カゲは飛びこんでいる。

とっても面白いのは、カゲが大きくなりたがる様子 −
ふつうの子供はゆっくりだが、カゲはまったくちがう。
インドゴムのボールのように急に背が高くなったり
小さくなったり、まるきり見えなくなることがある。

カゲは子供の遊び方というものを知らずに育ち
出来ることは、僕をいろいろとからかうこと。
僕の後ろについて、カゲは気が小さいと思うだろう。
カゲのように君たち姉やについていたら、恥ずかしいよね。

ある朝、太陽がのぼる前のことだけど
起きたら、キンポウゲに露が輝いていたよ。
でも僕のカゲ君すっかり寝ぼけてしまい
ベッドでぐっすり眠り、僕についてこなかったよ。
