バガヴァッド・ギーター -- ヘッセ

今日のドイツの詩は、ヘルマン・ヘッセの「バガヴァッド・ギーター」である。ヘルマン・ヘッセの版では、主人公が戦争の悲惨な事実に悩んだあげく、戦争を放棄しようとしたが、インドの聖典を思い出し、自己の義務を遂行しようとしたという筋書きで終わっている。ヘッセは彼の苦悩の過程を描写しているが、特に彼の決定を支持していないと私は思う。

Wieder lag ich schlaflos Stund um Stund,
Unbegriffenen Leids die Seele voll und wund.

Brand und Tod sah ich auf Erden lodern,
Tausende unschuldig leiden, sterben, modern.

Und ich schwor dem Kriege ab im Herzen
Als dem blinden Gott sinnloser Schmerzen.

Sieh, da klang mir in der Stunde trüber
Einsamkeit Erinnerung herüber,

Und es sprach zu mir den Friedensspruch
Ein uraltes indisches Götterbuch:

»Krieg und Friede, beide gelten gleich,

私は大地に蔓延する炎と死
多数の無辜の民が苦しみ、死に、朽ちるのを見た。

向こう見ずの神が感じない苦痛である
戦争の中止を心に誓った。

だが、私の悲しい孤独な時間に
記憶が呼び戻された。

インドの太古の神々の書が
私の精神を慰める格言を語りかけた。

「戦争と平和、いずれも同じこと
なぜなら死は精神の領域には関係しない。

平和の幕が上がっても、下がっても
世界の苦しみが無くなることはない。

それ故、汝は戦え、平穏に過ごすな。
汝が能力を発揮するのが神の意志！

だが戦いが大勝利になろうとも
世界の心臓の鼓動には影響しない」

古来より繰り返されてきたことば。＜多数が作り上げる人間社会＞が普遍であれば、これからもそうなのでしょう。＜業･苦＞とはよくいったものですね。詩の鑑賞というより教訓として読んでしまうようです。

そうですか。緑の森さんはインドの宗教・哲学を理解されるているようですが、私にはどうも難しいです。たしかに詩の形式に従った「教訓」です。死とは肉体と精神の分離であり、敵の死に悩むことはないというインド哲学の解釈にはついていけないです。ダルマ（義務）に従えというのは、命令に服従する兵士の悩みを救ってはくれますが。

I forgot the naome of this Indian Goddess with many arms, but she is very famous, I think. I have not yet visited in Indo Just I'm interested in Indian food(but I cannot eat food with hands. I use often fork when I eat^^)

So do I. I am not familiar with Hinduism. The Buddhist counterpart is 千手観音(The Enlighted with a thousand hands).
An English translation is Goddess of Mercy/Compassion. But according to more strict interpretation, "Goddess" may be wrong. It is allegedly unthinkable that women would be enlighted. Women are naturally emotional and not free from suffering for they give birth to children.

Do you feel it offensive? You can find a panel inscribed "God of Mercy" in Kyoto. A more moderate theology must be acceptable to women: The Enlighted persons transcend sexual desire, so meaningless to talk over their sex.

You can see the scene of a conversation between Krishna and Arjuna. Hindu God Krishna is standing while prince Arjuna is kneeling in the lower part of the painting.
