「今日の詩」はホィットマンの「なんと情けない」である。楽天的なアメリカ人のイメージを表現したホィットマン。今日はなぜか落ち込んでいる。

O Me! O Life!

O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring;
Of the endless trains of the faithless--of cities fill'd with the foolish;
Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?)
Of eyes that vainly crave the light--of the objects mean--of the struggle ever renew'd;
Of the poor results of all--of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me;
Of the empty and useless years of the rest--with the rest me intertwined;
The question, O me! so sad, recurring--What good amid these, O me, O life?

Answer.

That you are here--that life exists, and identity;
That the powerful play goes on, and you will contribute a verse

なんと情けない！

なんと情けない！．．．繰り返し生じる疑問について。
無限に連鎖する不誠実について ― 愚か者であふれる町について。
永遠に己をなじる私について（私より愚かで不誠実な男がどこにいる？）
むなしく光明を求める目について ― 情けない目的について ― 果てしなく繰り返される葛藤について。
何をしても出ない成果について ― 見回せばコツコツ働けど惨めな人の群れについて。
虚しく無意味な残された人生について ― 残りの人生と絡み合い。
なんと情けない疑問の繰り返し ― 情けない何か一つでも良いことが？

回答。

お前は現にここにいる ― お前には命が存在するし、生きている証も。
すさまじい芝居は続く、お前は詩の一遍でも投稿するのだ。
