人生の七段階 -- シェイクスピア

「今日の詩」の選者は何を思ったか、珍しいシェイクスピアを送ってきた。「お気にめすまま」の第２幕第7場のジャックの独白「人生の七段階」である。

余談になるが、一昨日のＢＢＣのメイルでは、再びストラッドフォード・アポン・エイボン出身のシェイクスピアなる人物が「シェイクスピア劇」の作者であるのかどうか疑問を投げかける俳優が声明を発したようである。

過去にはマーク・トウェイン、オーソン・ウェルズ、チャップリン等が名を連ねていたが、再び議論を蒸し返すようである。読み書きの出来ない家に生まれ、学歴のない男に「シェイクスピア劇」が書けるはずがないという主張である。死後400年祭まで10年を切って話題にはなる。

Seven Ages Of Man

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players,
They have their exits and entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
Then, the whining schoolboy with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden, and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice
In fair round belly, with good capon lin'd,
With eyes severe, and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws, and modern instances,
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well sav'd, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion;

世界は舞台
男も女も演技するだけ
退場し、登場するが
一人で何役も演じ
役は七つになる。まず幼児
乳母に抱かれて泣き、もどす。
次に、泣きべそをかきカバンを下げた生徒
朝は晴々だが、蝸牛のように鈍く
しぶしぶ学校へ。次に恋をし
女性の眉の下手なバラッドを書いては
大恥をかく。それから兵役につき
おかしな誓いを並べ立て、豹の髭を生やし
名誉に眩んでは、突如として喧嘩に走り
大砲を前にして
儚い評判を求める。そして裁判官
腹は出て、皴は鶏のよう
目付き厳しく、礼式通り髭を揃え
諺や前例に詳しくなり
自分の役を演ずる。第六段階は
細い下穿きズボンをはき
鼻には眼鏡、脇にはポケット。
若い頃からとってあったズボンは
皺だらけの脛には太すぎる。
男らしい大声も子供のように甲高く
笛のように高い声になる。多事多難な
奇妙な物語の最後の場面では
再び子供っぽくなり忘れ去られる。
歯も、視覚も、味覚も、すべて失う。

William Shakespeare~ I like reading his plays. In general, I like reading French plays or British plays. I'm interested in cultural differences between France and other european countries. I think that reading novles, plays and poems are good to have informations on this subject.

I am scheduled to translate German Poetry till December. I wish I could challenge French Poetry as early as January. But I am a stranger to French Rhyming rule, which is allegedly different from English or German one. My new assignment!

Unfortunately I am quite ignorant of Com??die-Fran??aise which enjoyed royal favour before the Revolution. I am interested, but don't know which drama to begin with.

こうしたものを読むにつれ、シェークスピアの人生へのリアリズムに感心するばかりです。誰しもが思っていることをくっきりと鮮明に言葉で言い表す。それも単なるアフォリズムとしてでなく・・・。「・・・再び子供っぽくなり忘れ去られる。歯も、視覚も、味覚も、すべて失う。」効いていますね、この言葉。

私の場合８割程度当たっていますかね。若い頃のズボンが太すぎることはありませんし、声が甲高くもありません。
