歌 -- ポー

「今日の詩」は久しぶりにエドガー・アラン・ポーである。ボードレールはポーを賞賛し、フランス人に珍しく英語に堪能であった彼は、ポーの作品をフランス語に翻訳している。ボードレールの賞賛にもかかわらず、いまだにポーの良さはよく分からない。技巧的に完成度の高い詩を書いた人であることは認める。今日の詩はお目出度い結婚式の光景をきれいに纏め上げている。

I saw thee on thy bridal day-
When a burning blush came o'er thee,
Though happiness around thee lay,
The world all love before thee:

And in thine eye a kindling light
(Whatever it might be)
Was all on Earth my aching sight
Of Loveliness could see.

That blush, perhaps, was maiden shame-
As such it well may pass-
Though its glow hath raised a fiercer flame
In the breast of him, alas!
