トミー -- キップリング

「今日の詩」はキップリングの「トミー」である。「トミー」はイギリス兵のことをさす。彼らのトレード・マークが伝統的に赤い制服であった。ワーテルローの戦いやクリミア戦争の記録画で確認される。

その兵隊達が外出を許可されたときの様子をキップリングは描写している。文中に色んな行進曲が登場するが、よく分からない。イギリスの軍隊オタクの人に聞くほかはない。

トミー

俺は一杯引っかけにパブに入った
親父が「赤い制服の方はご遠慮願います」と言う
カウンターの女の子たちは笑い転げてやがった
俺は街に飛び出して、一人つぶやいた。
だけど、トミーはどいつも同じ、「トミーは出て行け」

眠っている間皆を守る制服を馬鹿にするのは
制服よりもお安い、それに制服はおそろしく安い。
外出許可をもらった酔っ払った兵隊を押し込めるのは
正装して行進するよりも五倍も価値ある仕事だ。
だから、トミーはどいつも同じ、「トミー、元気かい？」

どいつもトミーは同じ、すきな物ならなんでも。
トミーは大馬鹿じゃない、トミーはちゃんと見ている。

キップリング

上の絵はクリミア戦争中の有名なエピソードである。当時は、銃弾の発射には時間が掛かった。次々と発射するには４人の兵士が交代するというのが常識であった。要員が不足していたので、士官が無理をして、二人で交代させて、敵を撃退させた。以来「薄い赤の縦列」は海外で活躍するイギリス軍をさす言葉になった。
