汝の日々は終リ -- バイロン卿

「今日の詩」はバイロン卿の「汝の日々は終リ」である。ある英雄の死を知って書いた詩であるが、製作された年は分からない。反逆児バイロンは母国イギリスの不倶戴天の敵であるナポレオンを賛美して詩を書いている。フランス革命の後継者であり、自由の戦士と評価する、ナポレオン伝説に貢献した人物である。ナポレオンは１８２１年にセント・ヘレナで死亡し、バイロンは１８２５年にギリシャで死んでいる。年代的にはナポレオンに捧げられた詩と考えておかしくない。私はそう思い込み訳をした。

Thy Days Are Done

Thy days are done, thy fame begun;
Thy country's strains record
The triumphs of her chosen Son,
The slaughter of his sword!
The deeds he did, the fields he won,
The freedom he restored!

Though thou art fallen, while we are free
Thou shall not taste of death!
The generous blood that flowed from thee
Disdained to sink beneath:
Within our veins its currents be,
Thy spirit on our breath!

Thy name, our charging hosts along,
Shall be the battle-word!

汝の日々は終リ、始まる賞賛の日々。
汝の祖国の歌が留める
祖国の息子の凱旋
彼の剣の戦果！
汝の手柄、勝利せる戦闘
汝が取り戻したる自由！

汝倒れて我ら自由と雖も
汝死することなし！
汝が惜しむことなく流したる血は
沈澱を潔しとせず。

バイロン卿

上の彫刻は熱狂的なナポレオン崇拝者であり、エトワール凱旋門のレリーフを担当したフランソア・ルード( Fran??ois Rude)の「永遠に目覚めるナポレオン」である。軍人の彫像は記念碑的になりやすいが、彼は自分の感情を表現している点で、彫刻におけるロマン派と言えよう。
