未知なるは人の道 -- スティーヴンソン

「今日の詩」は比較的最近に届いたスティーヴンソンの「未知なるは人の道」である。いつものように英語としては難しくない。だが、彼としては珍しく注釈が欲しくなる詩である。結局何を言いたいのだろう。有力な解釈があっても、それで訳を大幅に変える必要があるとは思えない。「死」をテーマとすることが多かった晩年の詩なのだろうか。それだけは調べてみたい。

この詩の真意が判然としない現在、上の絵が相応しいかどうかは疑問である。戦闘シーンが出てくること、登場する神がa godであり、ユダヤ・キリスト教の神ではない。大きく外れてはいない気がする。

そこで美術史上最も有名な戦争画。ポンペイから出土したモザイク「イッススの戦い」を選んでみた。言うまでもなく、右手はペルシャのダリウス二世、左手はマケドニアのアレクサンダー大王。
