女のハイ -- ブラウニング夫人

「今日の詩」は昨日送られてきたブラウニング夫人の “The Lady's Yes” 「女のハイ」である。苦手の詩人だが、エミリー・ディキンソンが崇拝する詩人の一人。エミリーを読んでいたせいか、今回は訳しやすかった。ブラウニングとの関係で作詩したものかどうかは制作年が不明なので分からない。間違いなく両者に共通点がある。

今回の詩は強弱格(trochee)を意識したものである。すでに彼女は「愛してね」で試みている。その時は７音節と６音節の繰り返しで作詩している。今回は７音節で終始している。すなわち
（強、弱、強、弱、強、弱、強）で終始したかったようである。これは当然であろう。韻文であるので、最後に強が来る必要があるからである。「愛してね」の場合、６行の所で同じ単語を繰り返したのはともかく、- ing を行末に使っている。これはヴィクトリア朝では韻とみなされなかったものである。今夏の「女のハイ」も「愛してね」も命令形の行が多い。完全とはいえないが、ほぼ強弱格が成立していることを示すために、強勢のある部分を太字で表記した版を付け足した。参考になれば幸である。さらに一箇所を除き韻の対が取れており、彼女が大変な技巧の持ち主であることを証明している。韻の構造は
[a, b, a, b]である。
