インニスフリー島 -- イェーツ

「今日の詩」はイェーツの “Lake Isle of Innisfree” 「インニスフリー島」にした。島といっても湖にある島である。現実に牧歌的な生活を送ったとも思えないが、彼は自分の心境を語る詩人である。インニスフリー島でのんびりと岸を打つ湖水の音を聞きながら、心に平安が訪れるのを待とうという心境を語っている。脚韻は [a, b, a, b]である。のんびりした調子を表すのにいいのかもしれない。

Lake Isle of Innisfree

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made:
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honeybee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evenings full of the linnet's wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear the lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.

インニスフリー島

さあ起きてインニスフリーに出かけよう
漆喰で出来た小屋がある。
わずかな土地を蜂の巣箱を置くのに買い
蜂のうるさい沼地で一人住むことにしよう。

平安が得られるだろう。平安はゆっくり落ちてくる
朝もやからコオロギが鳴く頃までゆっくりと
真夜中は微かな光があちこち、真昼は深紅の光
夕暮には至るところムネアカヒワの羽音。

さあ起きて昼も夜も出かけよう
湖水が岸を打つ小さな音を聞こう。
道端や灰色の歩道に立つと
心の奥底でこの音が響く。
