「今日の詩」はスティーヴンソンの「僕の齢を数えると」である。若くして結核にかかり、残された短い人生を延命の療養生活に捧げるのではなく、何度も吐血しながら、恋と冒険に生きてきたスティーヴンソン。彼の４４年の人生の終焉の地サモアで書いた遺言状であろう。サモアの王様は唯一信頼できる白人である彼を島で一番見晴らしの良い場所に埋葬した。
