雨の日 -- ロングフェロー

「今日の詩」はロングフェローの “The Rainy Day” 「雨の日」である。彼が思い切ろうとして思い切れない愛妻の日々を綴ったものと断定する。今は彼の名にちなんだ「ロングフェロー橋」を通っての求愛活動の甲斐あってファニーと結婚し、幸福な日々を送っていた。夫人の事故死で彼は立ち直れなかった。それでも教育者としての自覚からか、教訓的な態度で締めくくっている。模範的な人物であるが、詩の形式も模範的である。

The Rainy Day

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the moldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the moldering Past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast
And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart! and cease repining;

寒く、暗く、侘しい日。
