頌歌 -- ジョン・キーツ

「今日の詩」はキーツの “Ode” 「頌歌」である。今日の「頌歌」がキーツの短い人生の夏の時代に猛烈に書いた「頌歌シリーズ」での位置づけについて、私は不明である。キーツの詩はロマン派特有の長編詩が多い。それに以前「聖アグネスの夜」の一箇所で挫折した苦い体験がある。選者が送ってきたキーツの「頌歌シリーズ」がまだ残っている。今日開けてみたらこの詩は意外と短い。これなら途中で挫折しても時間的ロスは少ないと思い挑戦した。

キーツは以前紹介したが、長らくイギリスで放置されてきたホメロスの英訳の虜になり、ギリシャの文明に関心を抱いた。今日出てくる「吟遊詩人」はホメロスを指すのかもしれない。また死後の世界もギリシャ人の「エーリュシオン」である。

絵はフランスの画家オーギュスト・ルロアAuguste Leloir (1809-1892)の吟遊詩人ホメロスである。

Ode

Bards of Passion and of Mirth,
Ye have left your souls on earth!
Have ye souls in heaven too,
Double lived in regions new?
Yes, and those of heaven commune
With the spheres of sun and moon;
With the noise of fountains wound'rous,
And the parle of voices thund'rous;
With the whisper of heaven's trees
And one another, in soft ease

Seated on Elysian lawns

頌歌

情熱と歓喜の吟遊詩人たち
汝らは地上に魂を残し
天上にも魂を置き
天と地のいずれにも住むか？
そうだ、天上の詩人たちは
天体の太陽と月とともに。
神秘の泉の音とともに
雷鳴のごとき声の会話。
天上の樹々の囁きとともに
互いにくつろぎながら

エーリュシオンの芝に座し
草食むはダイアナの子鹿のみ。
青き大空の帳の下で
ヒナギクがバラの香を放ち
バラも自ら香水を得るが
地上の物とは異なれる。
ナイチンゲールも歌うが

神性の旋律にのる真実を歌う。

感じました。
