ソロモンはシバに -- イェーツ

「今日の詩」は “Solomon To Sheba” 「ソロモンはシバに」である。イェーツの二人のラブ・シーンの詩をこのブログで取り上げたが、よく分からないので多少関心を持った。今日は訳してみたら別段どうということもない。

ただシバの女王とソロモン王を訪問して妊娠したとされる。私はその子孫だと称する人達には興味がある。男と女が出会って妊娠したという話自体には興味がない。イェーツの意図するところは理解できないが、韻文で書かれている。

旧約聖書にある話なので昔から多くの画家が題材にしてきた。今日はこのブログ初登場のフランスの画家クロード・ローランClaude Lorrain (1600 – 1682)の「シバの女王の乗船」である。なおシバとは国の名前であるが、女王の名前みたいになっている。

Solomon To Sheba

Sang Solomon to Sheba,
And kissed her dusky face,
"All day long from mid-day
We have talked in the one place,
All day long from shadowless noon
We have gone round and round
In the narrow theme of love
Like a old horse in a pound.-
To Solomon sang Sheba,
Plated on his knees,
"If you had broached a matter
That might the learned please,
You had before the sun had thrown
Our shadows on the ground
Discovered that my thoughts, not it,
Are but a narrow pound.'

And kissed her Arab eyes,
"There's not a man or woman
Born under the skies

ソロモンはシバに歌う
浅黒い顔に口づけしながら
「昼間から一日中
同じ所で話し
影もない真昼から
堂々めぐり
愛の話ばかり
まるで柵の中の老馬−」
ソロモンに歌うシバ
彼の膝にもたれて
「王が学者も喜ぶ
話題を持ち出しても
太陽が私たちの影を
地面に投げる前に
私が考えているのが
柵だと悟るはず」
ソロモンはシバに言う
アラビアの眼に口づけしながら
「この空の下で
学問で私たちに向う
男女はいません。
つねに発見するのは
世界を狭い柵にするのは
愛だけだよ」

イェーツ
