一番弱い物 -- ブラウニング夫人

「今日の詩」の選者が昨晩送ってきたのはブラウニング夫人の “The Weakest Thing” 「一番弱い物」である。今日のブラウニング夫人は妙に悲観的である。もっとも詩人の陽と陰は真に受けてはいけない。会心作が出来れば上機嫌になるはず。彼女は大変な技巧の持ち主である。彼女は英語で始めて成功した詩形の栄誉の持ち主である。

今日の詩の構造は奇数行が８音節、偶数行が５音節である。一詩節８行であるが韻の構造は [a, b, a, b, c, d, c, d] となっている。

The Weakest Thing

Which is the weakest thing of all
Mine heart can ponder?
The sun, a little cloud can pall
With darkness yonder?
The cloud, a little wind can move
Where'er it listeth?
The wind, a little leaf above,
Though sere, resisteth?

What time that yellow leaf was green,
My days were gladder;
But now, whatever Spring may mean,
I must grow sadder.
Ah me! a leaf with sighs can wring
My lips asunder -
Then is mine heart the weakest thing
Itself can ponder.

Yet, Heart, when sun and cloud are pined
And drop together,
And at a blast, which is not wind,
The forests wither,
Thou, from the darkening deathly curse
To glory breakest, -
The Strongest of the universe
Guarding the weakest!

一番弱い物

私が思い付くもので
一番弱い物は何かしら？
太陽もあの小さな雲で
暗くなるでしょう？
雲も弱い風で好きな所に
運ばてしまうでしょう？
風も枯れた葉にも
抵抗されるでしょう？

黄色い葉も緑だった頃は
私は楽しかった。
今は春に何事が起きても
私は悲しくなるばかり。
ああ！葉はため息で
私の唇を開かせる。
だから私が思い付くもので
一番弱いのは私。

そう、太陽と雲がやつれて
一緒に落ちたら
風どころか爆風一つで
森は枯れ
栄光を呪う暗き死で
汝は消える―
宇宙で一番弱い物を守る
宇宙で一番強い汝！
