鳥 -- ヒラリー・ベロック

「今日の詩」は私が別段興味を持っている詩人ではないが、選者がずいぶん前に送ってきたものである。人騒がせなイギリス人であるが、ジャーナリズムが大衆化した時代には、これも文化人が備えるべき特性かもしれない。とくに読んだ気もしない詩であるが、作詩の教材にはなる。一行ラテン語が出てくるが、３詩節３行の詩である。各詩節は同韻であるが、脚韻になりやすい言葉を揃えている。-old, -ay, -ise と英詩を書く場合に必須の言葉が並んでいる。多作な彼がどういう動機で、どんな出版物で発表したのかは興味がある。

The Birds

When Jesus Christ was four years old
The angels brought Him toys of gold,
Which no man ever had bought or sold.

And yet with these He would not play.
He made Him small fowl out of clay,
And blessed them till they flew away:
Tu creasti Domine

Jesus Christ, Thou child so wise,
Bless mine hands and fill mine eyes,
And bring my soul to Paradise.

Thanks to you, I can know a new poet 'Hilaire Belloc'. In this poem 'The Birds' mean 'angels'? Because in the line 'till they flew away', they mean the angels, I think.

I cannot understand Hilaire Belloc's intention to write such a simple poem. I guess that he tried to publish an introductory verse books for kids and parent. He is prolific and sensational. Thaks for your interest! Now I have a call.
