慰め -- ブラウニング夫人

「今日の詩」の選者は久しぶりにブラウニング夫人の詩を送ってきた。題名は “Comfort” 「慰め」と訳した。彼女は念願かなってブラウニングとイタリアに逃避行し、４３歳で一児を高齢出産した。１９世紀のことである。生来虚弱であった彼女には死と隣り合わせの出産と育児であった。そんな彼女の神への祈りを想像しながら、優しい神と育児する母親を重ね合わせた詩と勝手に解釈した。知性派の彼女の詩はきわめて技巧的でもあり、ときとして日本語にするのが難しい。私の苦手の詩人である。

Comfort

Speak low to me, my Saviour, low and sweet
From out the hallelujahs, sweet and low
Lest I should fear and fall, and miss Thee so
Who art not missed by any that entreat.
Speak to mo as to Mary at thy feet!
And if no precious gums my hands bestow,
Let my tears drop like amber while I go
In reach of thy divinest voice complete
In humanest affection - thus, in sooth,
To lose the sense of losing. As a child,
Whose song-bird seeks the wood for evermore
Is sung to in its stead by mother's mouth
Till, sinking on her breast, love-reconciled,
He sleeps the faster that he wept before.

聞き逃したとは思わせませぬよう。

Yes, it is her portrait. According to her contemporary people, Mrs. Browning was not beautiful but very charming in character. Anyone who met her was attracted. Of course, Robert Browning was one of them. Agaist her parents' opposition, the couple ran away to Italy, the least expensive country in Europe, where they could afford to live.
